The tooth fairy

My 6 year old lost his first tooth today and he's my eldest so this is all new to me!

The tooth fell out when we were driving down the M25 on the way back from Lego land.

I just went in his room now and swapped it for 2 pound coins which I put on his chest of drawers.

Is that the right amount of money?! What do I do with the tooth now, bin it? Any guidance much appreciated!

My MIL insisted on keeping all dh's baby teeth and we still have them now which I really don't like so I definitely don't want to go down that road!

Ours does £2 (though there was a £5 uplift during lockdown when no one had any cash 😂).

I keep them all. It’s a bit grim but I can’t bear to just bin them. Though watch where you hide them.

Snacksgalore · 14/08/2024 21:47

I do £2 for the first tooth and £1 after that. Shiny coins only. Bin them. My MIL offered me all if DH baby teeth and I couldn’t keep the horror off my face.

A few days ago I only had a £10 note and was desperate to get change otherwise I kept thinking we'd have to set the bar ridiculously high if it fell out at bedtime or something!

But luckily it was today as I got change!

Also quite grateful it didn't happen when we were staying in the hotel for lego land otherwise I'd have had to navigate a ton of tricky questions about how the tooth fairy knows to go to the hotel and not our house.

Parenting is not easy 🤣

We did £5 for the first one and £2 after that.

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 14/08/2024 21:50

I remember always having 50p as a child.
When my DS loses his first tooth I'll probably give £2 coin, then £1 per tooth afterwards.

My SIL has a rich tooth fairy clearly as her DVC gets £5 note per tooth ! 🙄 bit OTT personally but each to their own.

I think I will keep the first one in his keepsake box but then throw the rest afterwards

xyz111 · 14/08/2024 21:50

Put the £2 under his pillow. The tooth fairy is meant to swap the tooth for money lol. I kept DS's first tooth, but threw it away as it seemed silly keeping it.

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 14/08/2024 21:50

DC** don't know where the V came from

bakewellbride · 14/08/2024 21:50

Interesting to see the 2 different answers on binning. I want to bin but will check with dh first. It's currently hidden on a high shelf in my room that the kids can't reach where I keep lighters.

Thanks everyone

@xyz111 I know this is OTT but I worry about ds choking on a coin which is why I didn't put them under his pillow

Just moved the coins to under his pillow

My kids never liked the idea of a supernatural entit7vusitjng their room at night, so teeth for the fairy and stockjngscfirvSanta get left on the mantlepiece. Cannot tell you how much easier I makes everything.

I kept their teeth and plan on getting jewellery made from it - they will both hate it but even the thought cracks me up so much.

OctoblocksAssemble · 14/08/2024 22:06

I'm feeling rather stingey now, I only gave £1 for the first (so far only) tooth. It wasn't even shiny 😅
I kept it, I like the idea of getting it set in resin or something, so that dd can marvel at how teenie her first tooth was, without it being quite so gross to handle. No idea if I'll ever get around to that though

LateMumma · 14/08/2024 22:25

Weve given a £2 coin for each tooth. Our DD knows now (11) and deliberately kept a piece of tooth back when the most recent tooth fell out so that she'd get double!

dbeuowlxb173939 · 14/08/2024 22:31

In our house she brings £1!
I bin the teeth, I know lots of people keep at least the first one but they really gross me out

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2024 22:32

Make sure he doesn't swallow the £1 coins. Had an adorable kid at work the other week, who'd been told money was dirty, so don't put it in your mouth. But since this one was from the tooth fairy it was clean. 🫣🤔🤣🤣

fredder · 14/08/2024 22:33

They have 20 baby teeth so we went with £1 each. I had 2 tooth fairy pouches so I could put the coin in one and swap it out from under their pillow rather than fiddling around in the dark trying to find a tiny tooth in a pouch.

My friend did one better by having a tooth fairy door attached to their skirting board on the landing. No need to be in the bedroom then.

BurningBenches · 14/08/2024 22:33

It’s £1 here, as a mother of non sleepers, some of whom used to still be wide awake when I wanted to go to sleep, with my second and third I got little tooth bags that I hung from their door handle. They’d put the tooth in and I’d swap when I came up to bed or before they woke up! The bag on the door also stopped me forgetting!

My youngest two are scared of the idea of the tooth fairy so not sure the tradition will continue.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2024 22:34

At had 20p. And If we lost a tooth after 8pm. We had to wait till the next night. As the tooth fairy was already out on her rounds. My parents had us going for years. Much longer than we believed in Santa.

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 14/08/2024 22:37

£5 here.

I bin them. DH is far more sentimental and wanted to keep them but who is going to want them in ten, twenty or thirty years time. Bin them!

theteddybear · 15/08/2024 12:23

We do £2 coin only had 2 teeth out so far, she's 7. I thought it was a bit low considering I got £1 30yrs ago. DH said not to be ridiculous and he's probably right. I also considered keeping them, then thought no it's weird isn't it lol.

I seen someone on TikTok taking their kids to smyths with their £30 from the tooth fairy! WTF 😳

ObsidianTree · 15/08/2024 12:28

I never have any coins so my daughter has ended up getting notes. Shamed to admit recently it's been £10 note as I haven't been able to get smaller from a cash machine. She's now expecting this for each tooth 🤦 my son mainly got coins but he hasn't noticed... Also old enough to know the tooth fairy isn't real!

SatinHeart · 15/08/2024 12:28

We've been doing £2 if it's a front tooth, £1 each for the others

longdistanceclaraclara · 15/08/2024 13:08

£1 for a tooth, £2 for a molar here. Until we went on holiday and h and I went out with different groups and there may have been alcohol involved. Dd got two $20 bills...

I have the teeth in a box in the cupboard. No idea why. They're pretty manky looking now some years later.

DadJoke · 15/08/2024 13:12

My DM did this for us - she insisted that DCs write a little note and she wrote one in return and gave them £1. They asked questions like "What's your name?" "What do you do with all the teeth?"
