REAL NAPPY WEEK-anybody involved in events? Do you think its important?

Its real nappy week next week but I've heard of hardly anything going on. I only use one type of nappy and in no way feel experienced enough to organise an event but WOULD LOVE to volunteer any help I can.

Anyone know of anything happening?

Do you think this is important in light of climate change etc???

Havn't heard anything about real nappy week. In my opinion there is not half enougth information out there for new parents. Real nappies arn't half as much faff as you think they are going to be and have saved us a small fortune as well as being better for the enviroment.
I know alot of local councils give grants to people to buy real nappies but in our area this is not made public, maybe if it was more people would be willing to give them a go. Maybe it would be a good idea to give information on real nappy use in the bounty packs given out to new mothers in addition to all those pampers vouchers!

BigBadMouse · 16/04/2008 16:18

I haven't heard much about it either (although tbh I am a hermit). That said, as a nappy advisor I am attending 5 different groups next week to demonstrate nappies as part of real nappy week. They are being held in various places - mainly breastfeeding, under ones or prenatal groups.

It isn't too late to get in touch with your local nappy project (if you have one) and see what is happening in your area. If you don't have local project then maybe ask MW or HV.

I agree a lot more could (and should) be done to raise awareness of cloth nappies. Many people struggle to afford disposables each week when there could be a cheaper, just as effective alternative out there for them.

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

maybe we should have our very own MN Real Nappy event and keep this thread or another REAL NAPPY ADVICE thread bumped and offer lots of advise to anyone considering real napies.

I didn't know about it either, and i'm an avid cloth fan.

cmotdibbler · 16/04/2008 16:24

Theres these events in Worcestershire.

I'd def go for the MN real nappy event

lackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2008 16:29

I've just had a look on the RealNappyCampaign website, and there are only two events listed for the whole of Yorkshire
There are probably others, but somewhere, but still......

loler · 16/04/2008 16:35

Hi - I've just had a look on your profile, where abouts are you?

I'm involved in a local group organising a Nappuccino and a stall in Mothercare. Our group would love to do more but suffer from a lack of volunteers. Give your local council recycling officer a ring and ask them if there is a local group you could become involved with.

Love the idea of a real nappy week thread.

BigBadMouse · 16/04/2008 16:41

14 events listed for cornwall but I know there are more than that actually going on in the county

MN Real Nappy Week Thread a good idea - not sure about the advice bit - you'd have to be careful what you advise. Info on grants etc fine but if someone asks which nappy would suit them best it might end up being a free-for-all with everyone suggesting their own particular favourite (just thinking this might confuse or possibly even put someone off trying cloth).

lackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2008 16:44

that's a good point BBM...maybe also pointing them towards their local advisors or something?

cmotdibbler · 16/04/2008 17:00

How about all the nappy enthusiasts here try and find out about the events for their area and we do a thread with everything listed and linked. If theres an incentive in your county, link to that info too. If all the info is collected this week, we could do a big post next week of it all together and keep that bumped, with a 'Whats on today' thing.

loler · 16/04/2008 17:54

Could ask that it gets one of those sticky things that gets the message at the top of the list of active conversations. Not sure how?

nappymadmummy · 16/04/2008 18:06

I am so annoyed with Leeds City Council right now. I have set up my own website at my expense to provide information and demonstrations so that Leeds residents know what they are entitled to because the current Council site is so crap. It takes ages to find the Real Nappy Incentives even when you know they are there.

Add to that I was supposed to be doing a demo on Thursday morning but I've been given the NO GO on it because...get this...it would be a commercial presentation [ANGRY] wtf???? I PAY FOR MY PETROL TO GET THERE, INFO SHEETS TO GIVE OUT AND I DON'T SELL ANYTHING THERE.

Daisy if you want to contact me about this or about organising something email me at [email protected]

Flamestar · 16/04/2008 18:10

Pissed off with my council too - I was told not to organise anything, they were doing a green baby business day and having a market type stall thing... they've told me f*ck all and I can't find any info on anything either.

Doing stuff on Bumfluff instead

nappymadmummy · 16/04/2008 18:12

Perhaps we could protest by covering council buildings in our nappies

lackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2008 18:43

or flicking poo filled fleece wipes at them

nappymadmummy thanks for that offer . I'm in Leeds too and trying to set up a cloth nappy business (but it's still at the very early planning stage). Do you sell as well or just advise?

lackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2008 18:45

oh, and what about Leeds Council's deal with the company that provides their incentive packs? surely that is a commercial venture as well?

nappymadmummy · 16/04/2008 20:01

I do sell some (on my other website - totally separate from the Leeds Real Nappies one) but I wouldn't worry about muscling in...I don't really stock that many.

I've already moaned and grumbled about their trial pack. I think it's a pile of crap . Have told them it's too complicated for beginners and doesn't show enough of a range. I did offer to help them

lackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2008 20:41

I liked the trial pack as I'd been coveting some baby beehinds nappies, but then I'd been using cloth for a while before I got it....but iswym though, they are quite complicated with the different snap in boosters and they way they do up.

BigBadMouse · 16/04/2008 20:42

Sorry, had to go cook disaster dinner, put monsters to bed etc....

lackaDAISYcal - yes, I think a thread which helped people find trial kits, local advisors, one to one internet adivisors would be a good idea.

Not sure about how to do the sticky thing either.

Totally agree about crappy trial kits - I've seen some 'interesting' kits, the contents of which would have had me running screaming to the nearest supermarket for dispicables . More often than that I see some pretty awful instructions included with the kits - clearly written by someone with no real experience of the nappies. Problem is, once you have handed a kit out people tend to feel awkward about phoning the advisor for extra advice so I really think decent instructions are very worthwhile...anyway, I digress (again )

lackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2008 20:44

MN have now got a "sticky" policy and will only award sticky status to threads generated by them.....bah humbug.

BigBadMouse · 16/04/2008 20:54

well, maybe they have a point. Imagine what stickies you could end up with if it were left up to MNetters - a load of lentil-weaving hippies harping on about cloth nappies, whatever next?

lackaDAISYcal · 16/04/2008 20:57

I prefer to knit yogurt than weave lentils, but hey, each to their own

night all xx

ilovewashingnappies · 16/04/2008 22:43

Yippee!!!! Glad you replied. We live in Darlington - hardly anything happening int Teesside, Yorkshire or Tyneside.... Thanks loler

nappymad - sorry they've been so uncoperative - that's crap.

I just feel like we could do something....but so taken over by new baby can't do it alone...

OP posts:
nappymadmummy · 16/04/2008 23:05

Had reply to my email about me not actually selling them...apparently that's not the issue. The problem is that cos I'm showing nappies I'm promoting them

nappymadmummy · 16/04/2008 23:05

It doesn't seem to matter that I'm showing many different types of nappy
