Should I start training now or wait? (DD 21 months, new baby due in 2 months)

Hi all

I finish work next week (wooohooo!)

Trying to decide whether to (attempt) potty training before or after the new baby is born in mid-June?

DD is showing all the 'signs' - we've had the potty lying around, she now asks for it and has peed in it on several occasions (no poo though). When she asks for the potty I let her take her clothes off so she can be bare bummed.

Only thing is she's not adept at taking trousers off yet (gives it a good go though) and is usually in cloth nappies so it's harder for her to get trousers off.

I wasn't even thinking about tackling the potty issue till later in the year, but she's starting to get obsessed with the potty now and my mum reckons it's time..

Any opinions?

Thanks

Claire

I'd wait. Chances are she'll regress once the baby arrives, and if she regresses but won't go back into nappies, you'll have a pig of a time coping with accidents and the new baby. I'd wait until after the baby came, adn the weather improved - why make life harder for yourself?

i think you should wait .my ds is 20mths and is telling me he wants a poo a few minutes b4 actually doing it which is a good sign but dont think he would have a clue about needing a pee. gonna wait to the summer having potty trained two kids b4 i know the whole thing will be easier.plus kids tend to got backwards with potty training when there is a new baby in the house (had experience of this)

Not sure...my sister potty trained her DS 2 weeks before her DD was born and he didn't regress.

More helpfully....my DD2 is cloth-bottomed. When we come to potty train her I'll put her in cloth training pants - they are much thinner and make trouser removal much less of an issue. They hold in accidents but are not designed to be very absorbant - might be worth a try

my ds decided to train at 20 months when ds2 was 6 wks old - imo its best to try now as easy to deal with accidents and endless pulling up pants before you have lo also after your attention.
He did have periods of regression as he soon realised he could get my undivided attention if he asked for toilet when feeding, out and about etc (he also seemed to develop an obsession with other peoples toilets) I have to say accidents are easier to clear up than nappies and only one in nappies is great (19 mo between ds's)

good luck with what ever you decide to do x
