Wind/poo/discomfort at night - HELP!!

Hello,

A 4am post out of desperation and wondering if you can help.

DS2 (8 weeks tomorrow) for the last few nights has been up and awake all night with what I think is a combination of trapped wind / struggling to poo. Up until now he’s been generally a good sleeper in the crib but as soon as I transfer him he is pulling his legs up, screeching, grunting, squirming etc. He seems to be in so much pain and he’s definitely awake, not active sleep. I’m trying everything - tummy massages (I did a baby massage course with DS1 and am doing all the moves recommended for colic and constipation), warm bath before bed, bicycle legs, burping well, tiger in the tree hold etc. he’s bringing up wind but still he seems so uncomfortable so I’m wondering if he’s trying to get a poo out (sorry - no other delicate way of saying it). He seems to cry every time he does a poo in the day - as soon as we put him in the car seat it seems to do the trick!

But this is going on all. Night. Long. As soon as I pick him up and put him on me he settles and sleeps, I feed throughout the night (he is ebf) but I don’t always think he is hungry as he doesn’t root around when on me and pretty much just goes straight back to sleep. I actually think feeding him when he doesn’t need/want it could be making it worse. Generally he burps well in the day - brings up 2-3 each side. I struggled with our latch initially but after help from HV we’ve sorted that and for the last six weeks it’s been fine, just in case that was causing excess wind too.

does anyone have any advice on anything else I can try? He’s swaddled in a love to dream swaddle and uses a dummy, but i am running out of ideas!! I know this is a phase and will pass as he grows but I’m so completely shattered and exhausted. DH has moved to sleep on the sofa at night and takes over about 5am so I can get some rest but we have a very active 2 y/o to look after in the day as well and I’m so tired I’m at my wits end. And i feel so guilty that I can’t seem to help him!

I’m sorry I don’t have any answers but I’m sitting here in the same position as you! Are his poos normal when they do come out? We went to a lactation consultant and she said our wee one could have infant dyschezia which apparently just sorts itself out - that just seems far away at the moment!

Good luck! 💐

Sorry to hear that @Slowcookertea - I stand in solidarity with you! Yes they’re normal and loose when they come out - my HV said if they come out hard / firm he’s constipated - but he just seems in such pain poor poppet.

Yes it’s the same here. Not constipation as when they’re out they’re good! It’s so hard to watch them in so much pain. I’ve found when he’s relaxed is when he’s most likely to poo or pass wind, so when he’s feeding or having skin to skin. Hope you sorts itself out soon for you!
