2 hour drive with 3 month old. How many stops?

Driving our LO in the car in a few weeks and will be around 14 weeks old (currently 3 months old).

It’s a two hour drive so I was thinking about stopping 2 times? I.e. after 40 mins and then 1.5 hours.

I would probably be a bit more flexible than that if you can? If they sleep through, keep going!

Mynewnameis · 06/08/2024 17:42

I kept going if they were asleep

God yes, if they fall asleep just press on! 2 hours is nothing.

I think the guidance is half an hour? So I’d prepare to stop four times.

Some people will say they’ve done longer and their children were fine, but I’ve never seen a reason to take the risk. It’s much better to get them out, stretch them out and make sure they are fine.

Think it depends on your car seat. We got one that lies almost flat. I also sit in the back so can check on baby. Just did 3 hour drive with one stop. Id agree with if baby is sleeping and your able to keep close eye on them keep going.

That’s what I thought, as in it’s 30 minutes for guidance? Hence the post

It’s the Pebble 360 Pro so it does have the lie flat feature but I know it’s not the same as a cot etc

So the 5 hour trip to my family people suggest stopping 10 times 😅
I'd literally never get there.

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 06/08/2024 17:54

I'd follow the guidance and ignore the 'in my day' brigade. They're the same numpties who used to travel with infants on their laps and without seat belts.

YouLookLikeStevieNicks · 06/08/2024 17:58

I'm pretty sure the 30 minute guideline is for newborns up to 3 months. For babies older than that it's 2 hours so you should be fine.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 06/08/2024 18:02

I did an 7 hour journey at 4 months. Stopped twice. A 2 hour journey at 5 months I didn't stop.

I'd try for baby's nap time and not stop at all. The 30 min guidance is for newborn, a 3 month old is fine for 2 hours.

Overthebow · 06/08/2024 18:49

The guidance isn't stopping every 30 mins. And 3 months isn't a newborn either so even if it were then at 3 months you can go longer, easily 2 hours if asleep. I would judge it on the drive. If baby is asleep just keep going. If awake and wanting milk then stop for a break.

gentlemum · 06/08/2024 18:54

There is no real official published guidance. But generally online people will say stop every 30 minutes for a newborn and drive no more than two hours for a slightly older baby. For me personally for a 2 hour journey I would likely stop at least once if someone was sitting in the back with them. If I was driving on my own I would probably stop more, maybe two or three times.
