When to move to a bed?

DS is 2y7mo. He gets in our bed all the time really I mentioned it and someone said oh time for a big boy bed

and I feel so silly it kind of slipped my mind? Hes still in a cot! And he loves to sprawl out when he’s in our bed he moves around star fishes etc

what age do they need a bed ? I thought 3ish but maybe he’d stay in his own bed if it was an actual bed ? Like a double floor bed? (Beds off the floor scare me in case he falls out :( )

My son went into a proper bed at age 3, he was in the cot till then with the side down for a few months beforehand. You can get removable bars to put on the sides of the bed if you're worried about him falling out.

I'm not getting my baby a cot. I got a single floor bed and my plan is to transition to that when baby outgrows the next to me.

18 months for us (toddler bed).

was it like a single/double off the ground? My DH said this. We were speaking about a small double as he’s quite tall and as mentioned in my post loves to move around!

just obviously I’m anxious and worry he’ll fall and it’ll be from a height !

My son is about to turn 3 and he's still in a cot. I have no interest in putting him in a bed while he's happy where he is and not trying to climb out.

littleoldme3 · 04/08/2024 21:47

@Mawm Does he climb out of the cot to get to your bed? We moved DS into bed when he was 3y 1m because he started climbing out of his cot. Until then he slept ok in the cot so I had no reason to move him. We started with turning his cot into a bed and put bed rails on it. Then at about 3y 6m I got him a single bed. He still sleeps with bed rails at almost 4 because he just rolls off the side 😅

No actually - he just stands up and shouts for me😂

My DC hated their cots. Refused to sleep in them at all. I even spent a few nights crammed in the cot myself just to try and settle them. I couldn't wait to get the sides off the stupid thing. Once the sides were off (which we did at 14 months) they were so much easier to settle.

Yes, a normal single bed, so bed would have been about 8 inches off the ground I suppose. He did fall out a couple of times, flooring was carpet and no harm done at all.

Devilsmommy · 04/08/2024 21:58

Single floor bed at 10 months for mine, with a guard obviously 😅 mine is a traveller before he gets comfy and sleeps 😂

Finchgold · 04/08/2024 22:17

My kids got a bed for 2nd birthday! I got foam bumpers which go under the sheet to stop them rolling out. First child slept way better once he had stretching room.

Our cot turned into a toddler bed. When they started getting into bed (around 2yrs old) with us we knew it was time for a change. We made it into a toddler bed and used one of those bed guards (bed was against the wall on the other side). It’s portable so great to take on holiday. We moved the bed to a different position, put up a new light. They loved the new room. They are able to get in and out of the bed at the bottom, but can’t fall out.

I love being gently woken up each morning around 0715 when then patter into our room and climb into bed for a cuddle!

DD went into a toddler bed just after 2 and we have been extremely lucky that she has never got out of bed in the night or fallen out. It's only a couple of inches off the ground and she loves it. DS is only 8mo but is already trying to climb out of the cot so who knows when he'll have to move to a bed.

Crunchingleaf · 04/08/2024 22:32

DC1 toddler bed at 12 months because he learned to escape. DC2 single bed just after he turned two because we needed the cot. Never climbs out at night and has never fallen out.
DC3 is 18 months and I am thinking of turning it into a toddler bed shortly.

reallytimetodeclutter · 04/08/2024 22:49

As soon as you hear the thud (then wail) of them climbing out of the cot!

Hidingplace · 04/08/2024 22:56

The cot we had was a cot bed. Our son had lots of problems sleeping but once he was in there, he really loved his cot. Would often often wake in the morning and just sing and chat away to hinself. We didn’t turn it into that bed until he was nearly 4; it was great for containing him while we could. It’s only a few inches off the floor and has hand rails but he still manages to fall out nearly every night. I think some people thought it was a bit odd him staying in a cot for so long but each to their own I say!

Plutofablestwo · 04/08/2024 23:05

Dc1 was 14 months as managed to climb out of cot. So had a mattress on floor for a while.
Dc2 and 3 were 22 months and went into normal singles with a bed guard. I also put the cot mattress out at night just incase they climbed out but never did.
Also a stair gate on the bedroom door was handy.

LoquaciousPineapple · 04/08/2024 23:13

We converted the cot into a toddler bed when toddler was 2, and they moved into a standard single bed at 2y9m.

Nat6999 · 04/08/2024 23:13

Ds moved into a bed when he was 3, until then he was still in his cot in our room, we had tried to move his cot into his own room but he wouldn't sleep so after a couple of nights we moved him back into our room. When we moved him into his bed, we put the bed into the larger bedroom & never had a problem.

petuliara · 05/08/2024 00:16

DD moved into a single bed at age 6. She had been in a cot bed in our room from birth, so the cost per use worked out to be tiny!

89redballoons · 05/08/2024 00:34

When DS1 was 2y 9m we went on holiday and realised he was too big for a travel cot, so he had to have a normal single bed with a guardrail on it. He got out of bed a couple of times the first night but took to it really well otherwise. We took the side off his cot when we got home and then got him a single bed a few months later, also with a guardrail on it.

That holiday was also when DS1 when he decided to drop his nap (so much going on, he didn't want to miss out) so normally he'd be absolutely shattered by the time it got to bedtime and would just collapse into his bed.

DS2 was in a mini cot until 2y 3m and we then decided to get him a toddler bed, again after trying it on holiday and it working reasonably OK. This was a couple of months ago. DS2 still needs a good hour's nap in the afternoon, as a result he is not as tired by bedtime and we regularly have up to an hour of him getting in and out of bed, turning on the lights, turning them off, crying, laughing, pretending he has pooed so one of us will come into his room, etc etc. 😵

So my advice is unless they are trying to climb out of the cot, leave the side on until they drop their nap, as then they will be properly tired at bedtime and will learn that beds are for sleeping in.
