I'm not quite at this stage yet, but I observed my friend with her DD. Yes she did just get folding travel potty out as and when it was needed. Make sure you don't give your DD lots of fluids before going out, get her to have wee before you do make a trip etc.. and have spare clothes!

Keep her out of nappies! Try to leave home (if possible) just after a wee, and yes, just let her sit on potty when needed. If she wets herself, no big deal. When 1.5 hours or so have passed, just make a big deal out of having to go yourself, and race her to the (hopefully clean) public loo, if she wins, she can go first!

just whip the potty out when you need it, yes its embarassing at first but it beats a clothes change and wet seat on the bus.
ds is 23 months now (trained at 20 months) but I still ask him if he needs to go before leaving and when we arrive somewhere, I also know (from first few potty training days) that its about 40 mins from juice cup to potty so I know when he needs to go roughly and can remind him if at toddler group.
the tommee tippee folding potty is good as has absorbant liners which would be invaluable on bus!
