When to start wearing bike helmets?

At what stage would you get a toddler a bike helmet? For some people here the answer seems to be never but I am from a country where it’s illegal to ride a bike without a helmet so I’ll definitely be encouraging/mandating helmet use. At the moment she only rides a shuttle bug and does have a helmet yet although I noticed a sticker on the shuttle bug saying a helmet should be worn. Did anyone get a helmet at the shuttle bug (or other tricycle) stage or wait until they have balance bikes or scooters or even a proper bike?

Immediately. Parents to wear one too. I never understand when u see kids and parents,- usually dad, not wearing a helmet

TheSecretIsland · 03/08/2024 11:09

Mine wore one for day one. Even on the push along trikes and balance bikes

The thought being then they would always link wheeled toys with helmets.

Mine are teens now and one of the few that still wear helmets, because it is so ingrained.

Straight away. Get used to no going on the bike without a helmet.

Immediately. Certainly from balance bike age. They have to completely link being on a bike to wearing a helmet. Non negotiable.

Agree, parent as well

And also I see parents that wear them when riding off road but not when riding on the road

We had helmets on kids and adults as soon as they were on a bike. Even a toddler on a bike seat.

StrawberriesandMango · 03/08/2024 11:11

From day 1 on any moving thing

mindutopia · 03/08/2024 11:14

As soon as they are riding outside the garden. Ours started with a balance bike, so no idea what they might ride before that. We have a big garden (5 acres), but they wore a helmet as soon as they rode anywhere that wasn’t grass in the garden.

Always. Ds was flying at speed on his balance bike before 2. Lethal if he had fallen off or into a tree

S0livagant · 03/08/2024 11:31

I'd say balance bike age at the latest. Are they going down hills picking up speed on a scuttlebug?

S0livagant · 03/08/2024 11:33

Balance bike on hard surfaces I'd say. If they were just on grassy hills next to a playground I don't think I'd worry.

Exactly, helmets for the kids because a head injury or worse for the parent doesn't matter, literally makes no sense

AlwaysFreezing · 03/08/2024 11:35

Outdoors, on a path, on anything self propelling = helmet.

MindatWork · 03/08/2024 11:36

We didn’t put one in DD with her scuttlebug (she only moved at snail pace bless her) but always one in her once she got a scooter (around 2.5) and then once she got a bike.

It terrifies me seeing small kids flying along on scooters on the school run with no helmets - on the pavement but alongside a main road with a 40mph limit 😩

bravotango · 03/08/2024 11:43

Another vote for immediately - got him used to it as a baby in a bike seat, now anything remotely bike like needs a helmet. I wear mine always too even when pushing the bike with him sat on it to reinforce the association

PartnersInCrime · 03/08/2024 11:44

From the first balance bike/scooter stage with parents setting example.

yodaforpresident · 03/08/2024 11:45

From day one and on scooters too.

VictoryOrDeath · 03/08/2024 11:46

Yes, day 1, then it's just normalised.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 03/08/2024 11:47

Mine only used their scuttlebugs indoors so they didn't wear them then. As soon as they were outside on scooters, balanced bikes or whatever, they were in a helmet. The helmet went on and then we went to the shed and got whatever we were going out on. No helmet, then no equipment

mitogoshi · 03/08/2024 11:47

From as soon as they get a bike

mitogoshi · 03/08/2024 11:48

Also scooters, roller skates and skateboards

Hairyfairy01 · 03/08/2024 11:51

If it has wheels (or 4 legs) and it's outside you wear a helmet is always my rule. It is one of my few non negotiables.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 03/08/2024 11:51

As soon as the vehicle is something one theoretically could fall off. So not for tricycles and 4-wheel sit-on toys, but always for balance bikes, scooters etc. Parents also always wear one to model appropriate behaviour.

MallikaOm · 03/08/2024 11:51

In many countries where helmet use is mandatory, it’s common to start using helmets with toddlers, even for activities like riding a shuttle bug or tricycle. Helmets can be a good precautionary measure, especially if there’s a risk of falls or bumps.
Here’s a general guideline for when to introduce a helmet:

  • Shuttle Bug/Tricycle Stage: If the manufacturer’s sticker recommends a helmet and it’s part of your country’s safety norms, it’s a good idea to start using one. Helmets can help establish a safety routine early on, even if the risk seems minimal.
  • Balance Bikes: Once your child starts using a balance bike, helmets become more important due to increased speed and potential falls. Helmets should be worn every time they ride.
  • Scooters: Similar to balance bikes, helmets are essential for scooters. They provide protection as children gain more control and speed.
  • Pedal Bikes: Helmets are a must for pedal bikes, as the risk of injury increases with the complexity of the bike and the speed at which your child can travel.
Encouraging helmet use from a young age helps establish good safety habits. Even if your child is using a shuttle bug, wearing a helmet can be a proactive measure and set the stage for future biking activities.
theveryhungrybum · 03/08/2024 11:56

At the same time as you buy the bike.
