Have we got the dreaded chicken pox?

Both my boys have woken up this morning with these spots on their backs.

Do we think chicken pox? Or are they more likely to be little bites from playing outside all day yesterday? They don’t have a temperature or anything like that.

They’re due at nursery this morning, and would hate to send them in if they’re infectious.

Have they been unwell or out of sorts in the days leading up to the spots ?

Some of those look well on their way to blisters to me, so yes, I would strongly suspect chickenpox.

Are there any on the scalp? That would more or less confirm it.

@LizzeyBenett @DreadPirateRobots

They haven’t seemed out of sorts, but we’ve been staying with their cousins over the week so they’ve been having so much fun and not stopped. The eldest is tearful this morning and a bit snotty? Could that point to chicken pox?

They’re both saying the spots don’t itch. At what point would they become itchy? And none on the scalp. Just their backs/sides/bums/tops of arms.

They start itching when they turn into fluid-filled blisters - lots of pics of the rash online if you want to check.

They look like the start of chicken pox to me. DD wasn't poorly with hers.

I'd keep them off today and monitor them to see how they develop.

Thanks everyone!

I’ve kept them off, we’re going to get the paddling pool out and see how it goes.

In some ways I’d be pleased if they both have it now, they’re 2.5 and 3.5 so it’ll be good to get it out of the way whilst they’re little.

Just make sure none crop up near their eyes if they do then straight to the doctor

I agree, it does look like the start of CP.

If it is chickenpox remember NO ibuprofen. And use Virasoothe gel as it keeps the spots moist and then no scabs or scarring. It’s wondrous stuff.

DreadPirateRobots · 02/08/2024 10:50

Look on the bright side, both of your DC getting it at once is the jackpot chickenpox-wise and way better than doing a week of isolation with one DC and then bracing to do it again in 1-2 weeks for the other one.

Looks like CP. Oat bath was helpful when mine had it, put a handful of oats in an old pair of tights & tie it over the tap as you run the water. It makes it milky & it's very soothing.

Emmelina · 02/08/2024 12:17

Yes, it looks like it could be! Keep them off for today at least and call the nursery to check in. They may have other known cases, or this might fizzle to nothing over the weekend and they can go back, but you've not taken a risk.

i would say you'll know for sure within 24 hours!
