10 week old and always looking around and staring at the lights and rarely looks at us. Is this common?

It’s too early to tell whether or not there are any issues such a neurodiversity. Way way too early. Though saying that it was identifiable in our niece (in hindsight) from about that age. She would actively avoid eye contact when feeding. All you can do for now is continue to monitor and speak to your HV in time if you have any ongoing concerns.

You need to make sure you’re close to her. At this age see needs to be no more than 25 cm away to focus on you.

My daughter was like this. For her it was due to undiagnosed food allergies and undertreated reflux. She was 17-18 weeks before she smiled and turned to sounds. It was only when she wasn't doing these things at 16 weeks, having first raised the issue at the 8 weeks assessment that it prompted further analysis. She was referred for a hearing test.
We had regular assessments with the HV due to my pnd and she checked her every other time she came. If you are concerned it might be worth a chat with your HV and they can keep an eye on them. When they are so small all sorts of really very minor things can mean that things are learnt a little slower than others. By 21 weeks my daughter was perfectly average having been on dairy and soya free breastmilk and adequate reflux treatment for 3 weeks

Thanks. When he locks eyes on us he smiles back and makes noises etc so think that’s a good thing!

If he's smiling and making noises when he does lock eyes with you, that's great. Babies that age are often interested in lights. I wouldn't worry at all

All 4 of mine loved staring at lights at that age.
