Is this level of whining normal?

I've got a 14 month old DS who is absolutely wonderful. He has a habit however, of pointing at things and letting out the loudest whines and moans - and this is CONSTANT. It can be because he wants what he's pointing at, it can be because he wants you to describe what's he's pointing at, or it can be seemingly for no reason at all. He does this really loudly when we're out and about too.

Is this normal? I worry we've given him so much attention and never really left himself to himself, and that's why he's a tad demanding.

I should add that I do sometimes wonder if it's just standard baby frustration because he can't speak yet. He's so advanced in his understanding. Can point to lots of body parts, knows so many of the animals, understands absolutely everything we say. But atm he says about 10 standard words and no more. So I do think it could just be him not able to articulate himself.

He's my first so I just wanted to see if this was standard toddler behaviour for a 14 month old.

Some are like that and it sounds like your son is just frustrated. Some are whiney until they can crawl or walk or talk. Some are just chill about life.

Sounds very similar to my 16 month DS! He’s getting slightly better, but 2-3 months ago it was absolutely constant. Similar to your little one, quite advanced in understanding but speech hasn’t caught up, so I have put a lot of it down to frustration.

I think it's normal. Mine is a similar age and not whiny, but she is shouty instead. Some of her little friends are whiny! It's just their way of communicating I think.

And don't worry it's nothing you are doing wrong. Responding to his needs is the best thing you can do.

Thanks so much everyone, feeling reassured already.

The HV made a comment at his review about putting boundaries in place and telling him no starting from now. I thought it was just general advice at first, and it probably was, but did wonder if she said it because he was doing the pointing and moaning thing during our discussion. Not sure how saying no to him would help though, if that's what she was referring to. And I mean, sitting through a 45 minute review is no one's idea of a good time, especially for a one year old!

Glad to see it's normal. I did think it was frustration on his part, he just needs to find his words.

Sounds like a silly comment from HV. But hopefully she just meant saying 'no' if he does something dangerous (that's the only time I use it, though at this age it goes in one ear and out the other so you just have to distract them really). Telling a baby no definitely wouldn't stop them whining, they would just get more upset!

If my similarly aged daughter had been sitting on my lap for that long she would be shouting her head off, don't worry!
