Is my toddler really tidy, or is this just a toddler phase?

My 22mo DS seems to love cleaning, tidying, and doing things the “right” way.

He loves household chores and will try to clean the floor and stack the dishwasher, and if he finds a tissue or wet wipe he’ll try to clean his toys. Then, he’ll want to go and put the rubbish in the bin. When he comes in the house he’ll always want to take his jacket off and hang it up, and take his shoes off and put them away.

Do most toddlers go through this phase, or does it mean he’s naturally tidy?

I’m hoping he is 😅 DH is an absolute slob, it drives me crazy, so hopefully DS may not have inherited that particular trait.

We're all a bit OCD, if I'm honest
🤦🏼‍♀️ there's no such thing as 'a bit' OCD and OCD has nothing to do with being tidy

My DD was like this very early on and she's remained quite a tidy girl into her early teens! So you might be in luck OP!

@SerenityNowInsanityLater Sorry, I feel like an arse now - I know people mean no offence when they say that, it just really bugs me when I have to live and struggle with it. I wish I did just like a tidy house 😂

My dd is also 22months and does the same but I suspect it's just a stage I wish it was her nature but we will wait and see.
Dh is a bit of a slob too so I hope she doesn't inherit that.

It's definitely a phase unfortunately Grin
It's a lovely one though. They like to copy everything. It can be really good for establishing some routines and habits though - so def take advantage of that! Make sure he gets lots of attention and praise for doing the right thing and if he comments on Daddy not doing it - back him up!

Please, please, I'm the one who is sorry! Please don't feel like an arse. I am the arse! I should have been more considerate and thoughtful.

My DCs are students. They certainly could not be relied upon to put their shoes and toys away when toddlers but they are tidy now.

Himawarigirl · 29/07/2024 19:01

Definitely a phase, but keep it going as long as you can. My 5 year old still likes helping me hang washing and empty the dishwasher.

DustyMaiden · 29/07/2024 19:02

My DS was very tidy. A neighbour was late because she couldn’t find her shoes. He gave her a lecture about having a shoe cupboard and always putting them away. He has Aspergers.

My 19 month old toddler climbs off his chair and takes his plate, tiptoes and places it on the kitchen counter. He will wipe the table, put any rubbish he makes in the bin, tiptoe and shut the microwave if I leave it open.
i kid you not. His older sister( 21months apart)
takes it to another level.

i attach no meaning to it. In fact i praise them for helping out at home.

Granted I am a very tidy person so right from my womb they’ve known me to be always tidying things away.

Let your son grow at the pace he’s setting for himself.

My DS (5) would totally do this Grin (he is on a waiting list).

My son is a bit like this (he's 3.5). He even told his older cousin to clean up some food he had dropped at the weekend!

I am very clean and tidy so it could be a learnt habit. But even when weaning as a baby he was never interested in smearing himself with food or getting his hands stuck in. He used to hold them out to be wiped, now he asks me politely to 'Wipe my hands please Mummy.'

I like it in the house but I try to encourage him to not worry when we're in the garden or out and about- thankfully he loves mud and puddles!

I think stage. Mine are into the great outdoors clean up at the moment. Which is lovely till they appear from paths in the woods with poo bags and god knows what.
