Newborn is constantly miserable

I guess I’m just after some solace that others had miserable babies, and she’ll soon stop hating the fact that she’s alive! 😫

Pretty sure we have some sort of gut issues - she’s super windy, despite my best efforts to pace feed, lots of burps, bicycle legs etc, also infacol, gripe water, colief did nothing. Thought she might have reflux when she was first born as she was super sicky, but a change in bottles and formula made a huge difference up until recently, however she’s now projectile vomiting more frequently again at 7 weeks - I have a GP appointment booked for tomorrow to check for anything serious.

If she’s not asleep or eating, she’s crying, I can’t put her down for more than a few minutes before she starts making a fuss. I don’t think she’s in pain as she sleeps well at night, and loves the carry cot on the pram, so laying down flat isn’t an issue, but not being able to put her down in the day time without her screaming is now having an affect on my 4 year old, who is desperate to do fun things in the summer holidays.

I know it’s a broad spectrum, but she doesn’t really have any of the typical symptoms of reflux - up until the last couple of days she’s not been sicky, she doesn’t cough or hiccup when she feeds nor is she unsettled when eating, and she’s gaining weight fine.

Is there anything I should particularly mention to the GP tomorrow, I know they’re reluctant to take baby tummy issues seriously if they’re gaining weight ok.

I'm not saying it's definitely a milk allergy but have you looked into that?

Garman · 28/07/2024 14:25

Has she been checked for tongue tie, by an IBCLC or tongue tie specialist?

Did she have a bad birth, baby massage, may help, I forgot its name may help?

Cranial osteopathy?

People will say cranial osteopathy is dangerous but having seen it performed on my baby there’s absolutely no way it could be dangerous - she literally just held him in a certain way. Sure, maybe there’s no way it can help either, but when you have a miserable baby it’s worth a shot. Cured his torticollis that’s for sure.

Is not being able to put her down linked to the stomach issues? I ask because my eldest wasn’t keen on being put down and neither of my kids slept if I put them down. If she doesn’t like being put down, you could try a sling. If you don’t have one, if you can find a sling library, that’s helpful for finding one you like.

My daughter was like this it was due to reflux and multiple food allergies.
She needed the highest dose of omperazole and gaviscon to make any difference and me taking her allergens out of my diet.
She had ok weight gain. Happily following the 9th percentile and I was told you are small she's small she's gained weight well but after removing allergens she went up to the 25th-50th percentile where she has stayed.
She is in them minority in that she still hasn't outgrown her reflux and it still causes issues aged 4.

Wouldn’t there be more symptoms of CMPA, a rash and such?

She was a planned section, but they did need to use forceps, so she didn’t come out easy!

I feel for you OP it sounds so hard, i have no advice but sending hugs. My youngest sounds like they were very similar, never could put him down without making him miserable, hated the buggy, hated the car and his sleep was awful. We thought reflux, CPMA and other allergies were considered. All of the baby massage, checks and supplements were had. Turned out he's just a grump but he's broken me and the reason I didn't have a third! I hope the GP can he

I know your trying to set her down but look into the football hold. Used to do this with one of my day babies and after being held like this for awile was often able to transition her to a bouncy seat w vibration

Nickisli1 · 28/07/2024 18:13

This sounds like my daughter - unfortunately some babies are like this during the first few months but I promise you it gets better. Sending much love OP
