TODDLER ANTIBIOTIC TIMINGS- please help

Toddler (22 months) has been given antibiotics for a horrid ear infection and perforated drum.

The prescription says to administer every 8 hours which would mean waking her in the night as she is only awake 7am-7pm.

Can I give every 6 hours? (7am, 1pm and 7pm) or do I need to be strict with the 8 hour gap.

Help!

You need to follow the prescription, every 8 hours. Antibiotics have to reach and stay above a certain concentration to be able to have antibacterial effect. If you're giving at 6 hours, during your child's 12 hours awake, your child will have significantly less time with effective antibiotic concentration every day of the meds, and there's a higher risk of the antibiotics not working and/or antibiotic resistance developing for your child.

I'd take that to mean during waking hours, so I'd do one does at about 9am and another at 5pm. So 2 doses a day. Does it say how many doses to give in 24 hours?

No it doesn't mean that.

I would wake her up in the night to give it: my daughter had antibiotics which had to be every 6 hours and no food an hour before/after. It was a nightmare to timetable. The dose in the middle of the night was actually the easiest one! She sat up, had it, had a sip of water and went back to sleep. Some nights she didn’t even remember me giving it to her. I did have a newborn at the time so was awake for feeding anyway, I might have felt differently about waking her at 3am if not I suppose!

It's fine.

Yes, our toddler has been on antibiotics a few times and the first time we questioned about waking in the night and they said no. So we did it 7am, 1pm and 7pm! 😊

Ring any chemists and they will be able to tell you.

7am,1pm 7-8pm .Realistically 8hrly is not sustainable and would never happen in medical setting ,unless IV

@wefly yes, they worked every time 😊
