Blue badge for autistic child HELP

Hi, my son is 3 and autistic, currently awaiting an autism assessment. I applied for a blue badge for him because he meets the criteria and is quite severely affected by his autism. I’ve sent off as much evidence as I currently have e’g. Any paediatric letters I’ve been given but that’s all I can give. I have asked health visitor, GP and paediatrics to give supporting letters but they don’t apparently

i currently get carers allowance for him and middle rate care DLA.

just wondering if anybody else has had a blue badge given with little evidence?

I have a blue badge for my son, he is 9 autistic and cognitive delay, all i sent them for his was his ehcp and his diagnosis report, i doubt it would be easy to get a blue badge for a 3 year old though as they generally don’t have any awareness around road safety/ safety while outdoors anyway, thats why there are parent and toddler spaces lol xx

Have you sent off what you used to support your DLA application? The fact that you've already had DLA at middle rate should give them a good idea of why they need one.

Not autism, but we sent a diagnosis letter plus evidence of DLA award. Awarded blue badge just after 3rd Birthday and valid for 3 years.

@CCLCECSC omg I never thought of sending those off! I might send that as additional evidence

It's difficult to get blue badge with autism diagnosis, my son is 18 and gets high rate care and mobility. We have a mobility cat but he is not entitled to a blue badge as there is always an adult with him.

Listen2YourMother · 26/07/2024 20:41

@Dizzy82 so sorry to hear that! I’m based in Staffordshire and my son fits the criteria here. I think it depends on area sometimes. I know a lot of moms around me with autistic children who have blue badges

@Dizzy82 i don’t understand how he gets high rate mobility DLA but no blue badge? It says you’re entitled to an automatic badge if you apply for it

Doest the mobility part of dla start at 5? That's when we got our blue badge

Listen2YourMother · 26/07/2024 20:52

@IncessantNameChanger yeah it does! But you can get a blue badge based on just mental health now, you don’t need to have a physical disability anymore

If you meet the criteria you can get high rate mobility under 5. Low rate starts at 5. We were automatically entitled to a blue babe when my son got high rate mobility when he was 4. When DLA was renewed at 7 he got reduced to low rate as his walking had improved but still required help due to his autism. No blue babe then. We have one again now as an he has enhanced rate of mobility PIP as an adult due to his autism

Hi, I know this is an older thread but was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get a blue badge. My 6 year old daughter has autism and adhd and has no awareness of danger, is a major flight risk and I can’t actually restrain on her on my own anymore. In a meltdown she will actually climb onto my lap while I’m driving and tries to escape the car. She will run off as soon as the car doors open and finds walking even a few feet distressing as she finds processing the environment extremely overwhelming. She doesn’t get high rate mobility, her claim is up for renewal now as she was under 5 when I last applied and she is now 6. What sort of evidence do I need to send and how do I show her struggles? thanks

@Coulddowithchoc hi, my son got accepted for his blue badge and he hasn’t even got a diagnosis yet. I just filled in the form, listen the struggles ect and sent off all the paediatrician letters that we had so far. I also contacted his paediatrician to write us a supporting letter stating the reasons why we are requesting for a blue badge! You should definitely qualify

I know it's not the point of your post, but if she climbs on your lap when you're driving, it is simply unsafe for you to drive with her at all. Have you looked into full body harnesses for autistic children? Some of my pupils had them to travel in our minibus (and to and from school)
