Is there anything I can do to keep healthy after a child has vomited?

DD was sick twice yesterday evening. No other symptoms of being unwell. She had been to GPs and had two slices of birthday cake, so I am wondering if that did it. She is fine this morning but obviously not going to school (they haven't broken up yet).

This weekend I have a big conference coming up that I have been preparing for for months, lots of people attending, expenses already paid and I'll be earning almost my whole month's salary from this event. I really, really, can't miss it. Can anyone advise on anything I can do to try and stave off illness, other than just handwashing?
I was the only one home yesterday when DD was sick so I cleaned it all up, cleaned her, cleaned the carpets, etc.

Keep your fingers crossed. You've been down in amongst it cleaning it up and you're in close contact while she's unwell. Wash your hands regularly, change the towels, try not to touch your face, and hope for the best.

Have you got any masks leftover from COVID times?

PrincessCalley · 25/07/2024 08:07

You might be fine. In all the times my kids have been ill, I've only ever caught a big from them once. Wash your hands and hope for the best.

No masks that I can think of, I've probably celebrated throwing those all away and putting that behind me.

Yes I did think that the bulk of the damage was probably done spending 2 hours cleaning her, and cleaning it, yesterday evening. Today I will be on it with washing my hands, I would have washed them yesterday because of handling sick although it was late at night so I think I did it on autopilot without registering doing it.

Really, really hope I'm alright, and that it was from too much cake rather than a bug!
She has said she still feels unwell but whenever I ask why she says "because I was sick yesterday" (she's only 5) so isn't actually saying she feels sick now, feels poorly right now, no complaints about how she is this morning. She's happily watching TV.

DH was sat on the side of a road last night after knackering our car putting the wrong fuel in it...and he is wondering why I said that he got the better option of what he did with his evening last night! I wouldn't mind having to cancel any other work appointments, but would prefer not to cancel a conference!

It does sound like too much cake rather than a vomiting bug. I always confine vomiters to one bathroom and we all use the other to avoid contamination. Also if any of your toothbrushes were in the room when she was sick then either bin them or wash in a bleach solution. Hand washing and sanitising too. Make sure shared cups glases and cutlery have been washed in very hot soapy water. If you have to share a bathroom then clean with bleach solution.

This sounds more like overindulgence than a bug.

Lots of handwashing, get clothes worn yesterday etc in washing machine on hot

There are drugs you can take if you feel sick? Anti emetics, the name of any escapes me, but they are available otc.

You still might feel crappy but at least you know you wont throw up.

DS was so sick over the weekend he ended up in Hospital after we phoned 111 for advice.

Happy to report that he's the only one who has been sick so far. It's not a given that you'll get it too Wink

I usually get some zoflora and spray everything with that.

Thanks everyone. So far today she has been absolutely fine, hasn't felt sick, very disappointed that she isn't at school for their last day of term. She is eating fine.
Still being cautious just in case but it is looking like a one off and not a bug which is good.

Our grandson vomited twice when we were looking after him a couple of weeks ago, once when I was extremely close to him.

I've been fine, which was a relief as I'm a borderline emetophobe!

It could still be a bug. We once had one that made DH and both my DDs all vomit once and then basically be fine the next day. They all got it a few days apart so it wasn't something they all ate.

Do you tend to catch bugs from her? DH seems to catch everything and I've never caught a sickness bug from them. I think some people are more prone.

If she was sick Wednesday night, at the outside you'd start getting ill Friday night, but it would probably be sooner. So it might be that even if you catch it, you can be over the worst by the weekend.

Not always. I sometimes get her colds but it isn't a given. She's only been sick about 3 or 4 times in her life and I have never caught a sickness bug from her.
I'm not a very sicky person though, I can count the number of times I have been sick from illness in adulthood on one hand (maybe only one time). DH is sick every time he is ill but I don't seem to experience that.
