Should I have said something

out for a family day out it was a little drizzly and we saw another young family, and they had a young baby in carry cot In a pram and instead of the rain cover they were using a bin bag. They’d put a bin bag over the carry cot, pulled down, maybe leaving an inch or two at the bottom.

before anyone says how do you know a baby was In there, we were walking behind them and through the small gap you could definitely see.

would you have said something, I think maybe I should’ve because of how dangerous it is

No i wouldn’t have said anything, its not my business and commenting on peoples parenting decisions/styles is never received well, even if its helpful.
I probably would have jokingly said something like “yea i feel like putting my kids in the bin sometimes too!” 😂 They are only trying to keep their baby dry and probably forgot their raincover 🤷🏻‍♀️ xx

Perpetualoverthinker · 20/07/2024 22:39

I suppose but it’s so dangerous, accident waiting to happen. I did wince. But yeah it’s never well received.

personally I’d always rather hear, especially if it’s potentially life saving. But maybe I’m the exception

Giving the benefit of the doubt - they forgot their rain cover.

This post could have read 'should I have said something? Drizzly day and family had the baby getting wet in the carry cot without a cover'

Presumably the pram was not unattended at anytime and a baby young enough to be in a carry cot would not be able to reach and pull down the bag. It won't have been airtight so the baby wouldn't have suffocated.

Sometimes you get caught short and you have to make do. They don't need to be told it's not ideal to use a bin bag but it is what it is and it's better than a cold wet baby.

How is it dangerous? it's a makeshift rain cover, if they'd created a hole it is literally no different to the rain cover and likely just a one off make do as they'd been caught short.
What exactly do you imagine the conversation would have went like?

Well they hadn’t made a hole, the gap was the end of the bin bag. It was very slightly drizzly not hammering down and the child was unattended momentarily as we were on a sight seeing walk, but if you don’t know that a poly bag over a baby is a suffocation and overheating hazard, I don’t know what to tell you.

It's clearly a short term measure, baby not left alone, too young to "play" with the plastic bag. Keep your beak out.

May not have been, short term or not, it’s still risky.

regardless I didn’t say anything.

It's a bit bonkers but I doubt it's their every day solution.

How do you imagine the conversation would have gone had you said something?

I probably would’ve given them my rain cover, it’s a universal one I picked up when I lost mine and said something like do you want this, I don’t really need it anymore, bin bag might slip down and could be a bit risky. You can have this, I don’t need it anymore

@Perpetualoverthinker

Well, if you're carrying around a second rain cover all the time and can give that away then perhaps it would come across as kind rather than judgmental.

Most likely though I think you're living up to your username and shouldn't worry too much about it. I doubt they use a bin bag normally.

It’s not a second one, it’s my one but my kid barely uses pushchair

so there was a gap? yet you're claiming the baby was at risk of imminent suffocation?
You need to work on your over thinking.
