Hi guys looking for a bit of advice. My 5 month old baby constantly wakes at 3am talking away to himself and been genuinely happy and is also taking a 7 0z feed. Has anyway else experienced this 3 am wake up or has anyone got any advice on how to stop this.

he generally goes to bed between 7:30 and 9 he usually has 3 naps a day 1 longer one of around half an hour the rest small 10 min cat naps. Thanks for any help.

That's not very much day sleep for a five month old. My guess would be that he's a bit overtired and that leading to the wake up in the night. Could you try putting him down for naps a bit earlier to see if he'll sleep longer in the day?

Yourethebeerthief · 20/07/2024 08:13

Way too little daytime sleep for his age I would say.

Hey 👋 yes my 6month old did/does this on occasion no particular set time, last night she woke up after 2 hours in bed and was wide awake giggling and talking for an hour or so and then finally settled down, like your lo she doesn’t have very long naps, only 2 and only for 40mins each, so i think the longer sleep at night is refreshing her energy, no advice im afraid i tend to just wait it out, keep it calm and try not to engage too much (but shes so damn cute its hard not to haha) if shes fed, changed etc i have just popped her back in her cot and gone back to bed, i find she will sometimes just fall asleep and sometimes not 🤷🏻‍♀️ xx

I would agree that he's overtired, babies need much more sleep at that age than what you're describing. Could you try contact naps for a while and see if you can lengthen at least one nap?

Overthebow · 20/07/2024 08:50

Yes I’d agree that doesn’t sound enough sleep during the day. 10 min naps definitely aren’t long enough. When he wakes at 3am does he then go back to sleep after? If so then that is pretty normal for a 5 month old.

Thanks for the reply, we try putting him down to sleep multiple times a day but he doesn't have none of it lol.

Babies need a lot of encouragement to sleep. If you want to help him have longer naps… try movement and closeness. So either a pram walk/in the car if he likes movement. Or for closeness and movement - wraps and slings can be amazing. Or just a contact nap where he sleeps on you whilst you watch a bit of TV. Babies this young will struggle to sleep without a bit of support. Hope that’s helpful. Also night wakings are pretty normal for babies this young too but as others have suggested it may be due to tiredness so might help to try and extend the naps x

He sometimes takes a bottle to settle him then goes back down. Last night he took bottle but did not go to sleep until a furthur 2 hours.

That’s not unusual then, at 5 months they don’t usually sleep through the night. I have an 8 month old and he still wakes for a feed in the night and is sometimes awake for an hour then goes back to sleep. My 4 year old often still wakes in the night!

I’d use the sling or walk in the pram for longer naps.
