If you had a late talker, when did they finally start talking?

My 19-month-old daughter can't say any recognisable words yet, although she babbles a lot and can sign quite a few words. It's also clear that she understands a lot of what we say, as, when asked, she can select the correct colour, toy, book etc.

If anyone had a similar situation with their toddler, please can you let me know when they did start talking, and if they required any outside intervention?

Many thanks!

My daughter said less than yours at 19 months. At two she had about 5-8 words - mass anxiety and paid lots of money for private assessments who all said watch and wait basically (and patronising advice like, do you read to her) . What was clear that my daughter understood what was going on.
Anyway, since about 2 years 3 months her speech has just progressed and progressed m. We have since found out she has glue ear and is struggling to hear certain sounds - her speech is more unclear than her peers but she talks a lot lol.

I hate hate the competitive 'my child can say this many words/etc' it made me so anxious and sad . I think my overall experience has been there is a HUGE amount of variation at this age - but speech differences are so noticeable that it becomes everyone's focus.

Nearly 3. He could understand everything and point to anything you asked but he didn't seem to physically be able to form the words.
When he did start he went rapidly from single words to full sentences.
He had some speech therapy when older for a few sounds he had difficulty with but all resolved by the time he was in senior school.

Thank you everyone, I feel very reassured.

A couple of you have mentioned that your children wouldn't attempt something until they were sure they could do it- my little girl is very much like this! She is very cautious and was late to roll, sit and walk as well (she still can't crawl!). Her fine motor skills have always been good, however, so I suppose that's why she's more comfortable signing (not very accurately, but good enough that we can tell what she's trying to communicate!).

My 2nd was 22 months when he started talking. It was once his elder sister went to nursery.

Our eldest had about 10 words at 2 and by 3 was speaking in complete sentences with a great vocabulary , it was almost as if he was waiting until he could say something worthwhile . He was diagnosed with moderate bilateral deafness when he was 6 , he had taught himself to lip read very effectively . He also has ASD but is very high functioning .

Shortly after her second birthday.

She had barely a handful of words by that point. All the understanding was there, she just wasn't talking. She was then moved up to the toddler room at nursery, and her language simply exploded. We think she realised that she needed to communicate to be able to play with the others. She's nearly 5 now, and she never stops talking ...

My very vocal adult son who was in the debating society at school, chairs meetings, compares at award ceremonies and generally will make a good argument about anything didn't really speak until around 3 yrs old..and even then had a stutter for 6 months once his speech took off..
I know it's hard but try not to hurry..

If I recall, close to 3. He's 16 now, perfect.

As soon as my DD turned 2 she started talking and hasn't stopped since!!
No real words before 2 though but then complete sentences.
She was the same with walking - 16 months til she was walking but then was running straight away.
