What time do your primary kids have dinner/tea?

DS9 hungry after school (says school dinners too small but won't have packed lunch as he wants to sit with friends).

If he has a decent snack (which he needs otherwise he wants to keep on snacking), then I push dinner forwards to 6pm.

Either that or give him his meal at 4pm. When I do this, he eats the lot. Then he has something else before bed (pancakes, Weetabix, crumpets etc). Problem is when DH makes it, he adds sugary toppings etc.

DS is very tired at the end of this term. He eats a good breakfast but is often too tired to eat all of his meal at 6pm. Then he wants more food at 7pm or 8pm.

Move the meal to 4pm? It seems early but he eats more of it at this time. Then something before bed. His slightly younger brother doesn't like to eat as early as 4 as he has a good packed lunch and isn't as hungry after school.

Feel like I spend all evening in the kitchen!

Mine are 11 & 6. We eat anywhere from 7-8pm. 4/5pm would be way too early for all of us, and I’d have no time to cook dinner. They have a sizeable snack after school and plenty of fruit/veg to snack on throughout the afternoon. Then we eat once dinner is cooked and we all have time to sit down together.

Breakfast 7.30am, lunch around 12noon, dinner 4pm. Supper 6pm.

Similar to this, but dinner around half 4/quarter to 5. Children are 2 and 6

I've been doing this parenting gig for almost 18 years so used to eating at daft times now🤷‍♀️

AGreatUsername · 16/07/2024 17:15

I usually do tea for 5.30/6.30. I work until 3 and DH gets in at 5 and if we ate any later I'd feel like I had no evening to to relax!

Ineedaholidayyyy · 16/07/2024 17:18

My son always wants his tea as soon as we get back from school, he's always starving. I give him a snack, and then he will have his tea anywhere between 4 and 4.30, followed by pudding. He will then have a supper, which is normally cereal or toast around 6pm.

spriots · 16/07/2024 17:20

I have found that mine just aren't civilised until they are fed so they eat at around 4/4:30 which feels ridiculous but there we are

I think part of the issue is that that's when after school club feeds them 3x a week

getyergladragson · 16/07/2024 19:34

I gave him oatcakes and milk after school today. Then we had tea at 5:15 (he had a large plate and ate it all) followed by pudding. He then told me he was still hungry at 7:15 so he had toast and milk x

Mine is exactly the same, he also has 2 breakfasts every morning. I do wonder what the portion size is like as whatever they give him does not fill him up, and he's a good eater they say. He couldn't wait until 6 or 7pm to eat tea like some families do.

YouJustDoYou · 16/07/2024 21:24

The school lunches are waaay too small for mine so they stopped having them (one single yorkshire, one single slice of pork, one piece of broccoli, for an 11 year old), they have snacks when they get in at 3.30, dinner is then 5.30/6, and final bedtime snack of banana or something at 7.

Thinkbiglittleone · 16/07/2024 21:29

We have tea at about 16.00/16.30 - our DS is always starving when he gets in so he eats yoghurt /fruit while I cook tea, then after tea he has some dessert or snacks then supper (porridge/ crumpet etc) at 19.00/19.30 before bed

elliejjtiny · 16/07/2024 21:34

My dc are aged between 10 and 18. I normally do tea for about 5:30/6ish to the absolute horror of my mil who thinks tea should be on the table at 5:30 precisely and not a moment later.

BondStreet · 16/07/2024 21:35

DC has a snack each after school and then we eat around 6.30. Pudding afterwards (yoghurt or fruit usually).

unlikelychump · 16/07/2024 21:37

My 8yo has a mini pizza after school or a tea at after school club (beans / waffles etc) and the supper at 6 then late supper at 8.

And then up to 4 eggs for breakfast..
