My LO is just over 5 months old and has generally been a brilliant baby from the start.

About 3 weeks ago, his teething seemed to really ramp up. He started to refuse his bottles and push them away after 1oz. He would usually take between 8-9oz at each feed, averaging 40oz a day. I realised he would take the majority if his bottles if I gave him a teething powder half an hour before. This has been working brill until Sunday.

On Sunday, his intake has slowly dwindled. He's still having the powders before his bottles as his gums seem to still be bothering him. He has also started being sick/spitting up after almost every bottle now. He has never been a sicky/spitty baby and never really suffered with reflux.

Is this a teething thing?

I also think he is now starting with a cold (I am just getting over one). He sounds quite snotty, is sneezing and coughing a fair bit. This morning he took about 6oz rather than his usual 8.5oz and there was no way he was having anymore. He is playing on his piano now and have noticed a big wet patch on his shoulder so have obviously been sick/spat up without me knowing now.

Sorry for the long post but I am a very anxious FTM and I just don't really know what to do for the best.

Any suggestions welcome.

My DD always went off her milk when she was coming down with a cold. As long as it doesn't last too long, I wouldn't worry x

Avie29 · 16/07/2024 08:39

Yea try not to worry, as long as hes still having plenty of wet nappies its all good, same as us when we are ill we don’t have much of an appetite 👍🏻 xx

Marcy919191 · 16/07/2024 11:23

Yes, I agree check his nappies. As long as he’s got a few wet ones during the day he should me okay. I think it might the cold but keep an eye on it and if it lasts more than a few days call the gp. When my daughter lost her appetite was because of a cold not for teething but every baby is different.

Thank you. He's started with a bit of a runny nose now and sounds snotty. Have been using Sterimar spray before his bottles but giving it to him is a challenge in itself. He finished his last bottle (8.5oz) at 11 o'clock so feel a bit happier but he was gulping it, not sure why. He hasn't done that for quite a while.

What do you think about the sudden spitting up? I've just had to change his clothes because he brought up milk a few times since and was wet.

He hardly ever spits up usually. Occasionally maybe a tiny bit but never that much I've had to change him.

Maybe he’s got some catarrh in this throat?

Teething and colds can both trigger reflux. The combination of the two could tip a baby that hasn't previously had reflux into a bit of reflux

Those teething powders are shit- there’s zero evidence they work and they made DS sick. Nurofen is the best for teething and will also help if he’s feeling grotty with a cold so I’d try that. And do you have a snot sucker for his nose? Swallowing loads of snot can also cause reflux and sucking on the bottle is going to be difficult if he’s struggling to breathe through his nose.

The powders seem to be the only thing that have helped. The one feed I tried without one (other than his morning bottle) he pushed away after 3oz. Gave him a powder before the next feed and he finished 9oz. Anbesol does work but I think at one point it was numbing his mouth too much.

I bought some Nurofen the other week in preparation for when the teeth are cutting through or affecting his sleep. So far, he's sleeping fine on a night. refuses longer than 40 minutes for his naps though!

We have a bulb thing we got in a Tommee Tippee kit but its useless.

It's all got to be related surely.

Neurofen is the best for teething by far and have you tried the Calpol saline nasal spray for his nose. It flushes it all out brilliantly. Hope he feels better soon 🙏

Might have to give him a dose of nurofen. Haven't tried that one. I've been using sterimar which he doesn't like but he at least used to let me put it in, now he just thrashes his head around like a fish! I'll have a look for the Calpol one but out Tesco is rubbish!

Going to the doctor's at 3.45pm just to rule out ear infections etc as he's been playing with his ear (I know that can be a teething thing) but it's also quite sticky so not sure if there's a bit of discharge somewhere.

We had a Braun electric nose hoover. Disgustingly effective.
