Younger children at sports day?

Basically just a question because I have no idea. DD is 2 and is looked after by grandparents on a Monday, it’s nephews sports day next Monday who is 3.5 and they want to take her along to it. She’s the type that’s going to run around and want to get into things - I said I will keep her at home with me that day, but they are adamant they want to take her along.

Is she going to be a massive pain in the backside/get in the way or are there a lot of younger siblings at these type of things?

She can't be running about, can't they use a pushchair or reins?

Hardknocks · 15/07/2024 20:51

She wouldn’t be confined to a pushchair or reins. When we take her out she walks nicely next to us or holds hands, but let loose in a field? Not gonna happen. GP seem to think it’ll be really kid friendly and she won’t be a problem. I’m pretty sure she’s going to spoil it but they are adamant 🙄

We nearly had a punch between parents last year when a small child ran on the track in the middle of the highly anticipated Y6 boys sprint.

She'll probably be a handful but grandparents are happy with their ability to cope.
Bottom line is you won't be there so let them get on with it.

Hardknocks · 15/07/2024 20:52

Sorry I should’ve said it is a pre-school sports day, only up to 5 year olds if that makes much difference..

If one of them is willing to take her off when she refuses to stand or sit and watch then fine but you know your child ... they'll learn

mynameiscalypso · 15/07/2024 20:57

I think it will be fine. DS is in Reception and half the children in his class wondered off during sports day. Only problem will be if it's very hot/sunny.

Hardknocks · 15/07/2024 20:58

Yes DH says I have given them an out and they are sure.. you know you just don’t want your kid to be the one having a hissy fit because they can’t play in the bloody egg and spoon race

It sounds quite shit, but I suppose if they can’t manage it one of of them will have to take her home while the other stays to watch.

elliejjtiny · 15/07/2024 21:01

My dc have all been to their siblings sports days, apart from dc1 obviously. There will be loads of other little ones there.

gerart · 15/07/2024 21:02

We took 2yo to my reception child's sports day, we have no childcare and we always take her to school events. It was fine, we sat in a roped off area and she enjoyed watching the races, we had plenty of snacks, some toys and when she got restless I took her for a walk in the spectators area. It never occurred to her to try to join in.

mindutopia · 15/07/2024 21:15

It will be fine. Loads of little ones at our sports day. As it’s preschool, it will be short anyway. One of them can always get up and take her for a walk.

fruitpastille · 15/07/2024 21:45

It's totally normal to have little ones at a sports day.

fruitpastille · 15/07/2024 21:45

It will probably get rained off anyway!

Honestly, if weren't there I wouldn't care.

Fudgetheparrot · 15/07/2024 22:04

We had loads at DDs, teachers put them to work collecting bean bags lol

AppleCream · 15/07/2024 22:06

It will be fine OP, there'll be loads of siblings there.

Oblomov24 · 16/07/2024 06:12

I think it'll be harder work than they imagine to keep her entertained. Although tbf it is a pre-school rather than a school. It's actually quite a different setting, yes there are obviously siblings there, but it's not a crèche, it's not childcare. At primary it can be competitive, see incognito!! Grin

Greengreengrass972 · 16/07/2024 06:24

It’s not unusual - there will be many younger siblings there with parents who haven’t got additional childcare or where both parents want to watch. As long as they are looking after her and keep her with them it will be fine!

Toooldforthis36 · 16/07/2024 06:27

Pre school sports day - will be like herding flies anyway even for the “seniors” 🤣 let her go and have fun

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 16/07/2024 11:22

It’ll be fine! There are always younger siblings.

My 3yo can only sit still for so long but she has never tried to join in a sports day. She likes to run around behind the roped off bit so DH and I take it in turns.

As already said, you’ve given them the out and they don’t want it. 🤷‍♀️

Mrsjayy · 16/07/2024 11:26

If they want to take her and say they can manage let them take her. If she runs amok that's on them isn't it?

VivaVivaa · 16/07/2024 11:34

DS1’s pre school sports day was a very relaxed affair. Just lots of outdoor toys and obstacle courses and water play that the DC went round in their own time with their parents. Your DD would have been absolutely fine there - DS2 is younger albeit walking and had a blast!

eurochick · 16/07/2024 11:54

It will be fine. There will be lots of younger siblings there alongside her.

Hardknocks · 22/07/2024 17:48

I just had to update this thread because hilariously, here is my 2 year old indeed taking part in the egg and spoon race at a nursery she does not attend. Turns out she had a great time and preschool sports days are free for alls 😂
