5 month old 2 week cough

Hello all

my baby is 5.5 mo the old and has had a persistent cough for around 2 weeks. It’s only really when getting worked up/ crying. It’s like a quick harsh dry ‘cough cough’ when he’s crying

weve both had a bit of a viral thing going on the last 5 days or so. But he’s had the cough since before this virus started.

the only reason he hasn’t been to docs yet is because his temps been okay and his breathing’s been fine. He’s just been congested but this isn’t unusual for him.

he’s been a little off his feeds the last few days but still having wet and dirty nappies.

were currently away in the UK so wouldnt be able to see my normal GP’s. Do you think I should be worried?

I wouldn't leave my five month old coughing for that long. Surely it hurts their throat?

I'd find a doctor and get him checked. Babies shouldn't be coughing for 2 weeks and you don't know why. I'm not surprised he's off his feeds.

I'd get it checked by GP purely as it's going on for a bit and persistent cough in anyone should always be checked just to be safe but I'd say maybe it could be from a post nasal drip . I can't remember age wise but maybe check in pharmacy to see if there's a natural cough bottle or remedy you can give at that age just something to soothe the throat like glycerine & lemon.

I would definitely go to a walk in centre in the area to get your DC checked over/make sure his oxygen levels are ok/nothing on his chest. They may even try something in case it's hay fever.

By the time you get home if not improved/gone I would then see your usual GP.

It's hard to say some coughs do just go on for a while especially when they are little due to their tiny airways. My DS needs inhalers he has childhood viral wheeze which we are hoping he will eventually grow out off.

I was waiting for the’ worst mum in the world’ comments! If you knew me personally you’d know I adore my babies and take them to docs when I really do feel they need to go. He’s already been in hospital 3 times after I’ve taken him to docs before due to high temps so I know when he’s really not well!!! It’s just I’ve no experiences with coughs as my first never really had them apart from a bout of croup when he was 1.5 years.

it says online if a cough has been going on in an baby for 3 weeks then go see a GP. It’s only been 2. And like I explained I have been monitoring it and looking out for other symptoms such as temp, noisy breathing, lethargic . But other than that he’s been just a little snotty the last few days which isn’t surprising as I’ve had a virus the last week as well.

I was just asking advice as to if anyone else has been through similar or if I should take him to a pharmacy to take a look at him before heading to docs.

he doesn’t cough all the time and not at all at night. It’s just when he’s crying or frustrated he does it. I wondered if it could be clearing the drool from his throat as he’s been drooling a lot?

I forgot to say he also has a floppy larynx so has always been a congested baby!

No one has said you're the worst mum in the world.

You asked. We told you what we thought. You do you.
