Is any one else in the depths of potty training and want to join me for some moral support? Due to opportune timing and a willing 2 year old I’m on day 2 of potty training. Mixed bag so far - a lot of successful wees but all with a prompt and none of his own free will.

but we’re in it now! so cracking on and hoping we see some progress over the weekend.

I'm at the end of day one with mine and came across this thread. Thank you for helping me soldier on!! We've made 2 wees on the potty and a fair few accidents but I'm getting to know DD's cues now 😅

Scirocco · 02/08/2024 22:03

This is it, we're starting at 5:30 tomorrow morning. Here's hoping for less actual bloodshed this time...

gentlemum · 03/08/2024 16:55

@GingerLiberalFeminist that's a brilliant first day! Keep persevering with it!

@Scirocco hope it went well today!

If it gives you both any more reassurance we're now about 4 weeks in and my little boy is doing so well. We have a couple of accidents here and there but I'm so proud of him and, even though I thought we'd never leave the house again, we do indeed leave the house! Good luck to you, it does improve! Just got to get through those first tough days.

@gentlemum thanks! We're on our fifth pair of pants (DC not a fan of being bare, so wearing pants only) but DC will now sit on the potty and we got one tiny bit of wee in. DC also continuing to drink reasonably, which they refused last time. Feels like we're achieving nothing but it's only day 1. Just need to keep going.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 03/08/2024 20:55

Honestly end of day two and I'm pretty keen to quit. She's getting so distressed with it all :(

It was about that stage that things went south for us last time. Do you think she's ready?

Scirocco · 03/08/2024 22:54

We've had a successful wee this evening but more due to chance than anything else.

It's been so hard. Tonight we had to play a game where I was the baby and DC was the mummy. I was to be sad and DC 'comforted' me. My heart felt like it was breaking.

HangryHandful · 04/08/2024 08:44

I just want to echo what @gentlemum said. The first 4 days especially were WILD but by he end of day 4 I was starting to see progress. I kept telling myself that if I wasn’t seeing any improvement after day 4 we’d stop but there is improvement all the time, every day.

so also 4 weeks in and still having the occasional accident but also having lots of no accident days and I am so glad we kept going past those first tough days!

the First week to ten days were really tough going but it does get better. It is chance to start with but the cues become clearer the more time goes on.

We chatted about it last night and decided to try again next weekend 😅

Hi just wondering how you got on with the potty training? I’ve just started with my 2 year old on day 4! We have a wee accident atleast once in a day, but last two days she’s ran to the bathroom for a poo. She poo’s around the same time everyday so I’m always prepared for that one!

SillyNavySnail · 03/10/2024 22:47

We're almost at the end of week 5, with my 2yr9 month old.

Today and yesterday she had no accidents at nursery!! It's much more common to have accident at nursery, so we're so proud. She had 4 accidents Sat and 3 sun, but none Monday either. Tuesday we were out 2hrs morning at playgroup and had 3 false alarms.. she just wanted to go flush the toilet, home 1hr, then out 3hr and no accidents, she even said 'potty' in the car 3 mins from home and managed to hold it til we got home. Tho 2hrs later had am accident at home

The first week it was 4ish accidents a day, bare bum. Second week (still bare bum at home) 2ish per day, tho often bit of pee on floor before finishing on potty. No more poo accidents. Week 3, some days no accidents, sometimes 1 or 2 accidents

Babyboop · 03/11/2024 21:57

I’m struggling. My son has been using the potty for months but when we try and put underwear on him he absolutely hates it. If he wears a nappy he will wee in it but always poops on the potty. If he has a bare bum he will happily go to the potty for a wee wee. We have tried underpants and boxers. On a rare occasion we have managed to get some underpants on him he has weed in them & refuses to put a clean pair back on. Suggestions are very welcome. He’s nearly 3.

Have you tried no pants, just trousers?

Babyboop · 04/11/2024 15:19

I shall try that today x

Scirocco · 04/11/2024 15:27

We're still persevering. DC still having 1 or 2 accidents most days. Nursery and friends' parents keep saying DC's still "so little", but they're almost 2 and 3/4 now... Part of the issue seems to be a real lack of concern on DC's part about the consequences of an accident - wet clothes are ok to keep playing in, changing clothes is fun, cleaning up is fun, getting washed is fine, they'd rather have any or all of these things (which they're unbothered by) rather than stop an activity they enjoy. My washing machine remains unhappy.

K4515 · 04/11/2024 21:21

@Babyboop I had the same issue with my son when he was 2 years old, he would use the toilet fine just refused to wear underpants. As I was toilet training him during the summer months he was in shorts most of the time. He used to love the book Aliens love underpants. So I got him some Alien underpants, he did hesitate to wear them at first but managed to get them on him. So maybe you can try some underwear with his favourite character and see how that goes.

MerryLou · 21/11/2024 15:51

Hi, I've just joined mumsnet and spotted your post and I'm in a similar position with my little boy so wanted to check in if that's ok. How do you feel things are going now?
Mine is 2 and 4 months and around October, was doing really well on the potty. We got to wearing underpants stage and all was great but then he started doing a bit of wee in his pants, stopping when he realised, and then he'd finish on the potty. It then got worse to loads of full accidents, especially at nursery, so I've gone back to scratch but I'm feeling really confused!
He can't hold it in anymore so I'm doing pull ups when out but naked waist down in the house but then nursery are doing something different (he's there 2 days) and my parents are doing there own thing (he's there just a day)....I feel stressed out with it!
I feel bad doing pull ups when out but he stresses doing accidents out so I thought it may be best but I've reached a point of I just don't know what to do anymore.
Today has been a good day and he asked for his underpants but he had an accident in them as soon as he got them on!

Babyboop · 23/11/2024 15:49

@MerryLou well his uncle visited and somehow persuaded him to wear boxer shorts. I actually cried. He doesn’t like underpants because the elastic around his legs. We are asking him to wee every 30 minutes on the toilet or potty. He has just stared to tell us he needs a wee but sometimes he will have a tiny accident and then realise first. It’s work in progress. He is reluctant sometimes so we are saying Santa will bring you big boy toys if you wear boxers and if you wear a nappy he will bring you baby toys. It seems to work.

JCAMRM · 26/11/2024 17:47

Started potty training for second time yesterday.
Started off with nappy pants on to get her used to something having to be pulled up and down. Pants today.
Have had literally no wees in the potty. One poo, but she has a lot of clues for that.
She will sit on potty for me and then wee 5-10 mins after she gets off it. Or straight after a meal before I have time to put her on the potty. I feel like it’s too cold at this time of year to do bare bum. Attempted potty training in summer when she was just over 2 but she didn’t get it so gave up until now.

Babyboop · 27/11/2024 15:26

@JCAMRM its such hard work isn’t it. My little boy does a little wee in his underpants then runs around in circles shouting I need a wee. We have had to back track because he’s poorly and just can’t be bothered so he’s back in pull ups. I know it’s cold but I think bare bum is the way forward unless they are tucked up on the sofa under a blanket, then accidents do happen. They don’t feel secure because they can’t feel a nappy. That’s why my son does a little wee, because he feels something there then realised it won’t absorb his wee. We literally put him on the potty every 30 minutes and he has just started to tell us when he needs a wee. I think they have to have accidents before they start to associate it with the need a wee feeling. I’ve put a waterproof mattress protector under a blanket on my sofa. Best thing ever.
