Banana..

So my DS eats half a banana and if DH isn’t around I never know what to do with it (I’m allergic, can’t eat it) I don’t want to freeze it because it will never get used!
what’s the best way to store half a banana for later?

Well you can't, it'll go bad. Either freeze it or compost it.

NotAlexa · 12/07/2024 12:50

You may not like this suggestion, but I would whip up quick 10 minute banana pancakes and 'store' banana in the form of pancakes..

cupcaske123 · 12/07/2024 12:50

Could you get a dehydrator and make banana chips? Slice it on your cereal, put it on toast, put it in a smoothie, make banana bread or muffins, make banana pancakes?

Can you cut the unpeeled banana in half before giving one piece to your child and then stick cling film over the cut end of the other half to stop it going brown?

RedRobyn2021 · 12/07/2024 12:52

Think of all the brown bananas that end up in the bin and on the rare occasions that your husband isn't around, put it in the bin.

Spending time making pancakes or banana chips is just taking things to a new level really and beyond me

MsMajeika · 12/07/2024 12:54

I pop it in the fridge and mash it into DC's Weetabix the next morning.

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/07/2024 13:03

Buy the small bananas instead of the regular ones and there shouldn’t be any wastage. Or otherwise what @dementedpixie says as in the skin and wrapped up in the fridge they’ll last until tomorrow. It’s supposed to be a cheap and zero effort snack, or at least it is in our house, so I wouldn’t be making anything pancake batter or buying a dehydrator or anything like that!

PortiasBiscuit · 12/07/2024 13:05

Leave half in skin and cling film.

How are you dealing with the fact that it sets hard and goes black when dropped on baby clothes?

Actually it’s a great suggestion :) thank you

Does this work?

@PortiasBiscuit it very rarely gets on clothes lol

@InTheRainOnATrain yep I buy the small bananas too. But you know what toddlers are like.. wants a banana.. takes a few bites.. no longer wants banana. Sometimes will eat the whole banana which is great lol

agree with cutting the unpealed banana. I don't bother clingfilming the end, just cut off the tiny bit of brown where it is exposed to the air before use the remaining bit

Twinkletwinklelil · 12/07/2024 13:14

@Bumbers @dementedpixie thank you!

Buy tiny bananas or have some on your granola?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 12/07/2024 13:17

If it's only occasionally your DH isn't around I'd either see if dc will eat the whole banana (small size as suggested) or not give them one til Dh is back.

Cheesecakelunch · 12/07/2024 13:17

Give half the banana and store the other half in the fridge.

MrsStottlemeyer · 12/07/2024 13:18

I wouldn't think twice about binning it tbh. Do you generally eat all his other cast-offs?

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/07/2024 13:24

If it’s already a small banana then I’d have guilt about binning it either, that’s a tiny amount of food

Julyshouldbesunny · 12/07/2024 13:27

No half banana has even existed in our house...

wishIwasonholiday10 · 12/07/2024 13:43

If you have a food processor or good blender freeze it and make 'ice cream' from it on a hot day (if it ever gets hot again). If your food processor is good enough it ends up with a texture like soft serve ice cream.

johnd2 · 12/07/2024 14:56

We just leave them on the side half eaten and then throw them out in the home compost bin when they get dried out or worse still mouldy. Occasionally the second half will get eaten.
To be honest our little one either takes one bite or demolished the whole thing, there's no middle ground there!

This is exactly what I do. My DD often has half in morning and half in evening and this trick works perfectly 👍

Sprogonthetyne · 12/07/2024 15:01

I'd just give them some other type of fruit. DH can give them banana when they're around to finish off the leftovers.

marshmallowfinder · 12/07/2024 15:07

I save half a banana in its skin, in the fridge, for the following day's breakfast. It's absolutely fine.

VivaLaSpag · 12/07/2024 15:18

mash or blend then chuck it in an ice cube tray-you’ve then got banana cubes to add to a smoothie or yoghurt etc.
I do the same with things like strawberries that are a little past their best and currently have a small freezer bag of random smoothie cubes!
