Long Plane Journey - 6 Year Old

Hi all,

I am soon to be going on a long haul flight (9 hours) with my only just 6 year old. It is the longest journey he will have done by some considerable margin.

Does anyone have any tips or must have purchases to help? I'm looking for both comfort and entertainment.

Any suggestions and tips from seasoned fliers much appreciated! It's only his second return trip on a plane too.

Thanks :)

Neck pillow, small fleece blanket, iPad with headphones, changes of clothes, baby wipes, colouring book, and lots of patience.

All of above. Plus lots of non messy and too sugary snacks. Stickers are good too. I printed off activity sheets for my 5 year old on a recent long haul flight, she loves crosswords and similar. I printed off these to suit her ability. Lolly pop for take off for their ears. Is it a day or night flight?

You can also get cushions and hammocks for children to raise their legs. There are lots of options however check with your airline if they accept these or not. As lots are not allowed.

Thanks both. Lots of snacks will absolutely be on the menu! It is day the way out night the way back. I just checked and footrests or anything like that are not allowed on our airline. I'm going to find a nice neck pillow he can take.

Our long haul flight was a night flight. So we also took her PJs and dressed her for bed too. She managed to sleep for around 7 hours of a 12 hour flight. So that was great.

Take a full size pillow from home rather than a neck pillow. The screen back TVs don’t always tilt down far enough for little ones to see properly and the folded up pillow (and the blanket they give you on the flight) will double as a booster seat so they can see the screen. (You can use the stuff sack from a sleeping bag to compress the pillow so that it fits in your bag.)
