Well I have 3 questions for all parents of four year olds who care to reply...

And they are:

  1. Is your 4 year old male or female?

  2. Does your four year old have:
    a) ONE best friend
    b) several or more good friends
    c) other

If you answered a) to question 2

  1. Is your child's best friend the same or different to your child in terms of: a) gender b) race c) interests

Very grateful to all who reply.

(btw- have changed name as will link to this thread in reference list of forthcoming essay, if enough peeps reply)

I'm always a bit late or last-minute, but here are my answers, FWIW:

My 4 yr old daughter has one best friend, a girl, broadly same interests. They were thrown together previously in the same group at creche as both were English speaking in a French-speaking group.

When my son was 4, his BF was a girl, but the common denominator again was language - they were the only English children in a French group.

Hope that's of interest - gives another dimension (ie common language) to your questions...

Hi
My 4-y-o is female. She has one special friend, whom she met at nursery school a year ago. She 'picked her up' straight away. Not sure why. Friend is very shy and quiet and used to cry about being left by her mum. My dd is very outgoing, loved school from the start (had been in day nursery before that) and quite ... er... loud . The common factor seemed to be that my dd's first name is the same as her friend's middle name, and in fact the friend is still known in our house by BOTH her first names (e.g. Sarah Jane, not just Sarah - though those are not her real names). DD is now at a different infant school from her friend, but they have kept in touch (well, obviously this is because we - the parents - have encouraged it) and are still 'special friends'. Friend is the same gender and race as my dd, but (as I said above) much quieter. They have similar interests, but my dd is more 'outdoorsy' whereas friend is more given to playing with dolls and such like.
Hope this helps.
