Breastfed baby lost weight

My 4 week old baby has lost weight at their most recent weigh in. They only lost 5% at 3 days, steadily increased and got to over birth weight by 2 weeks. But now 2 weeks later they've dropped below birth weight.

Feeding seemed to be going well, I've been using shields since week 1 because of pain but she seems to get milk fine through them. She had got more unsettled with lots of cluster feeds in the last couple of weeks but I thought that was to be expected given her age. I got mastitis last week too although that is now sorted (antibiotics).

She's been checked by the GP because of the loss and they were happy she otherwise seemed happy and healthy. We've been having wet and dirty nappies although possibly less wet nappies in the last couple of days.

I've been told to express after 2 feeds and give her what I get which I did yesterday (a bottle of about 90ml because I had 30 in the freezer). Today I've given her the 50ml or so I've got from pumping. But I'm not getting much out with the pump at all. I'm seeing the infant feeding team tomorrow but I'm really stressed and upset, a similar thing happened with my first (weight loss at 3 weeks after gaining well initially) and i had a terrible time and he ended up fully formula fed after a few weeks.

Today is the first day I'm noticing that she's not feeding well. She's fussing on the boob and falling asleep almost instantly so barely any good sucks and swallows. I have to keep waking her to get her to suck.

Any advice appreciated, I'm feeling fragile.

Congratulations on your baby, and for everything you do for her.

Please make sure you're eating enough food and drinking plenty of water, for yourself and your supply! I also tried Fenugreek supplementation, which my lactation consultant had suggested for me. Hopefully you'll find the infant feeding team session helpful.

My second DC has been combi fed since birth, by recommendations of paediatricians in NICU. Combi feeding might also be an option for you?

Both my DC had weight issues in the early days, and it was really, really tough. I honestly think BF is easier for some women than others, but please remember that fed is best, and your child is beloved.
