Csection in 7 days - husband has shingles

Jess1336 · 09/07/2024 11:23

Hi everyone,

I am due to have a C-section one week today. My partner has just been to the GPs to be told he has shingles on his stomach.
I have had chicken pox as a child so am not concerned about myself, just the baby once she arrives.

I haven't been able to get in touch with the midwife yet as mine is on long term sick but I am so worried about the baby catching chicken pox once she is born (I know they cant get shingles from shingles etc), worried about my partner not being allowed at the birth (?) or to be frightened to hold her once she is here.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or know if he will be able to be at the birth of the shingles are covered with a dressing or something? I'm so worried. Thanks!

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…

Oh FFS whichmag. We have a worried ftm who is aware of the other patients' needs and is acting accordingly by asking relevant people, just acknowledge when it's time to back off!

My kids caught chickenpox from me when I had shingles. I had the blisters covered, was scrupulous with hand washing and kept away from them as much as I could. When I looked into it I found lots of health departments online saying that it can be contracted via airborne droplets as well as by contact.

sarahsarahsarahsar · 10/07/2024 16:20

This happened to someone I know. The DP with shingles was allowed at the birth. The baby caught CP, because it swept through the family. They were hospitalised and given antiviral drugs and were fine. It sounded stressful for the family of course but the medics were all over it and acted very quickly.

CP is extraordinarily contagious, but shingles isn't, so as long as no one else around you catches the CP from your DH you should be fine with good hygiene?

Good luck with your new arrival!

Yes

HormonalHetty · 10/07/2024 16:31

My adult son is just recovering from shingles. He has taken antivirals and the blisters were dried up in 6 days, at which point you are not contagious. Should be fine OP. Try not to get yr self upset, it will all workout x

Impossiblethree · 10/07/2024 16:32

Chickenpox can be quite dangerous for babies / pregnant women but I’m not sure you can catch it from shingles or is the other way round?! I always get confused!

I accidentally took ds with me to an antenatal appt when he had c pox we were there hours as was busy. The next day when I let them know they weren’t happy at all and said it would have put people at risk they’d have to check who had appts to let them know they’d been exposed so I think these types of illnesses are taken seriously

Yes. Because I was assured by a qualified doctor that the virus could only be passed on if I rubbed the fluid from my blisters on a patient.

Seeing as I wasn’t planning on stripping off and rubbing my arse cheek on someone I thought I’d be ok. Plus I had a dressing, plus I always wash hands before touching a woman.

HcbSS · 10/07/2024 16:39

Sorted then OP. Good luck with the birth and get well soon to your boyfriend. Shingles is nasty.

Notcms · 10/07/2024 16:43

Good news OP.
My daughter had shingles and as long as it is covered there is no risk - oh and he can't bath with baby with shingles 👍🏻.
Glad it's all sorted for you x

ShatParp · 10/07/2024 16:56

@Jess1336 just to add another experience, my partner had shingles on his face (above one eyebrow) when my daughter was a newborn and we were told exactly the same, don't touch the blisters then touch baby, don't let her touch his face, etc. and she was absolutely fine, he was really careful with handwashing and we were told there is no airborne risk like there is with chicken pox.
You might be given your own side room if you're worried!
Enjoy your lovely new baby! 😊
