2 month old reflux

My Dd is 2 months, she's really struggling with bad reflux, she doesn't sleep for longer than 30 minutes without it waking her and screaming for half an hour until she eventually settles and it starts all over again, I'm at my wits end and hate to see her so uncomfortable. She has cmpa and is prescribed sma alfamino, have spoke to the gp three times about this, at first they prescribed gaviscon, then they took her off gaviscon and see how she gets on without it, they again prescribed gaviscon and said to persevere with it. She has now fully been on gaviscon for a month and if anything she is worse l al really struggling, is there anything anyone can recommend until I can speak to dr again?

Hello! First of all so sorry you are going through this. I’m on my second reflux baby now, it’s hell.

mine doesn’t appear linked to CMPA so we don’t have that angle but what has helped both times with mine is - thickened milk and omeprazole. You can use a carobel thickener for your milk although I found it quite tricky to use so it’s trial and error. And I pushed my gp for omeprazole.

also the CMPA milk is sort of in tiers. They start off with milk that has the milk protein broken down more. And at the top tier is neocate which has no milk protein at all I think. After the alfamino is nutremigen and then neocate. I don’t know about your milk but the latter two are extremely thin and watery so would have to use the thickener with that.

keep going back to the doctors. Weekly if you have to (I remember when my son booking weekly appointments until it got sorted). Emphasis the affect it’s having on you as well. And if you haven’t already, ask for a paediatrician referral.

it doesn’t feel like it now but it will get better. But until then you have to find a way through. I found cosleeping helped- no idea why as she was still flat but we got longer than the 30 minutes she would do in her own cot.

during the day I use a wrap or sling to keep her upright as much as possible.

keep going mamma, you are doing amazing xx

Thank you for your reply, I’m sorry to hear you are going through this as well it’s hard isn’t it! I’ve never heard of thickener for milk before I will look into it thank you, she was originally prescribed nutramigen but she screamed like she was in pain non stop for days so they made the switch to alfamino, if it goes in stages as you say it’s strange they put her back instead of forward, however the last time she was seen they did say she is still showing signs of an allergy so will refer her to the consultant, we’re still waiting on that appointment unfortunately. I will definitely keep going back to the gp though, oddly in the mornings she is fine she sleeps well with no problems once it gets to the afternoon it hits, I wish I could co sleep I am just such a deep sleeper and don’t keep still I’m too afraid, I do use the next to me with the side down and just don’t sleep with a cover but I don’t find it helps much, I have seen they can be tilted so maybe I need to look into that I’m not too sure

Mine can be tilted so we’ve started doing that as she’s finally going in there a bit now. I was really worried about cosleeping too. I followed the guidance on how to do it safely (sleeping in a c shape etc) and I became more confident but I really do prefer my own space so as her reflux has become slightly more controlled I’ve been trying to shift her out !

its possible I’ve got the formulas mixed up so don’t go by me ! Both me little ones tried diff ones (son tried neocate which is the most extreme and daughter recently tried nutrimegen). Both went mental but I’m not sure they have/had CMPA so bit different for us !

It is so so hard. And the sleep deprivation is brutal. So be kind to yourself, take help wherever you can. It’s so annoying when other people say this but it does get better. I hated hearing that with my son 5 years ago now. But it did get better, so I’m holding onto that this time round too.

Hows her weight ? The drs seem to care more if they aren’t gaining or not enough weight gain. My daughter is dropping down on percentiles but hasn’t dropped a line yet but I suspect that will happen in the next few weeks as she isn’t a great feeder !

My twins have cmpa and had reflux for the first 18 months. What worked for us was omeprazole (we had to increase the dose to above what the GP would prescribe but Paediatrican did). Then had carobel thickener in the milk too.

The girls were also originally on gaviscon until we changed to carobel.

We also used to give gripe water in the evenings.

Just a quick reply but DS had this too and used to vomit all the time.

GP I spoke to suggested an anti reflux formula which was Aptamil anti reflux and it was totally amazing. I’d never heard of it before but worked a treat.

@TheGlitterFairy aptimil AR milk is the winner for us too! But no good for CMPA. The Carobel thickener will do the same job in the CMPA milk though.

Hi so sorry, my baby has reflux and I know how difficult it is. We had some awful nights. The only thing that really helped us was omeprazole, she was like a different baby! It does get better, I promise x

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 08/07/2024 03:01

Tilting the next to me was a good move for us. Also letting baby fall fully asleep upright on shoulder before placing down into bed. I hope it passes soon.
