I had to have them weekly for my baby son who I now 4 weeks old… I’m terrified that I have damaged him.

it’s not just this article but that same doctor shared studies in his book that prove how this happens… I’m devastated.

did anyone else have weekly ultrasounds? I’m sorry worried I’ve hurt my son in some way and should have known better and listened to my instincts. He didn’t even need them anyway.. they were growth scans and he was growing well!

Ultrasound Safety, Something Obstetricians Need to Pay Attention To

Ultrasound safety. Is it safe to do transvaginal ultrasounds? What about ultrasounds to confirm gender? Here's what you need to know.

What? Did you not wear a foil hat whilst having your ultrasound?!?!?

paristotokyo · 04/07/2024 14:53

I had in excessive of 30 scans with my first. They're not ND. Please don't worry. Speak to your health visitor or GP, they'll be able to help you.

moose62 · 04/07/2024 14:53

I think you can make facts fit anything. I had a trans vaginally ultrasound every week till 12 weeks and then scans every 4 weeks till I gave birth to my son. He was fine in every respect.

My child with autism had fewer ultrasounds than my neurotypical one!

Moier · 04/07/2024 14:55

ASD is genetic.
Nothing like this nonsense causes it.

TraumaSalt · 04/07/2024 14:55

Also surely EVERYONE would be autistic if that was the case?

mnahmnah · 04/07/2024 14:58

You didn’t stop and think that people reading your post may be autistic or have autistic children and be offended by what you have written? Amazing lack of awareness.

@Doseofreality "Autistic people are not “damaged.

i’d suggest your appalling attitude towards neurodivergence is more likely to do harm to your child than an ultrasound"

Now that's a vile thing to say to a worried new mother.

Ops post was vile towards autistic people

Deebee90 · 04/07/2024 15:14

Give your head a wobble and stop reading junk on the internet. Ultrasounds don’t cause autism.

The fact she genuinely believed that article, with that image, from a website containing bucketloads of anti-vaxxing, conspiratorial shite says it all really.

OP needs better pattern recognition which ironically is what autistic people are very good at.

Yourethebeerthief · 04/07/2024 15:30

Why are things like this the current framing of what autism is?

The autistic children I work with are not good at pattern recognition. Some of them barely recognise the world around them. They need 24/7 care for the rest of their lives including personal care and care to prevent them self harming. One child is autistic and blind. He wasn't born blind but has blinded himself with self injurious behaviour. I'm sure the OP is worried about her child being severely impacted by autism.

The OP is clearly an anxious new mother and she's hardly the first to get carried away with post natal anxiety. There's a thread currently on this board where a mother can't even figure out how to defrost a muslin to give to her child for teething. Sometimes new mothers get in a tizz.

You and other posters should have some empathy for a worried mother instead of trying to point score as to who is the most accepting of autistic children.

Ignore this. It is quite understandable not to say 'oh that would be fine' when faced with the possibility of a ND child. They are hard work and not always the sweethearts/blessings their parents peddle them as.
But FWIW OP, don't worry. This author sounds like some quack conspiracy theorist with no idea about actual medicine.

I agree with this. Yes the ultrasound thing is bollocks. But I’m also unhappy about the tone of many of these posts.

Close friends have a severely autistic child. He is in residential care now as they could no longer keep him safe as he grew bigger. He is non verbal, screams constantly, will only open his bowels if sitting in water. And a million other things. Neurodivergence can mean a lot of things and I know my friend finds element of the recent trend to ‘celebrate’ neurodivergence quite upsetting and isolating. It is in no way unreasonable to be worried at the thought that your child may be neurodivergent.

@TheCultureHusks

Good friend of mine feels the same way. Child, now an adult, needs 24/7 care, barely sleeps, hurts himself and others, can't communicate, smears, has attacked family members multiple times. She wishes the diagnosis of Asperger's still exists as her other child has the same diagnosis but attends college and will soon be moving out on their own.

She has nothing to celebrate about her child's disability.

CaribouCarafe · 04/07/2024 16:13

timetobegin · 04/07/2024 13:36

I wonder how one of my twins dodged the ultrasound autism waves then? It’s bollocks, just ignore.

Clearly one twin used the other as a human shield against the US waves

OneFrenchEgg · 04/07/2024 16:39

This thread is really interesting and supports my growing unease about neurodivergence. Judy Singer intended to use it for people then described as high functioning - I guess essentially people who could express themselves, learn and were expected to support themselves through work etc. but where does that leave the rest of the autistic community? This constant 'it's just a different way of thinking' does some damage to the autistic people who can't use social media, who have profound needs, or who rely on others or AAC to communicate - who is hearing them?

coldsummer1312 · 04/07/2024 16:43

Can we have the opinion of parents of (between commas) "low functioning" autistics rather than of those with geniuses, who enjoy bashing the OP?

OneFrenchEgg · 04/07/2024 16:44

Oh btw forgot to add: ultrasound and autism no causal link I have ever seen credible argument for.

sparkles79 · 04/07/2024 16:50

This post sounds very familiar

Exactly. You are not allowed to say anything about ND which isn't positive or you are 'ablest'. Well fine, I am happy to be ablest then. I don't think anything that your poor friends are going through as positive. It sounds heartbreaking and the total opposite of what they use have thought parenting would be. As for calling ND a superpower, to me that's insulting to parents like them. Many ND people are not just 'a bit quirky'. It is life changing and frankly unpleasant. Can ruin marriages, destroy relationships with other children and leave a lot of resentment and burn out.

But still, OP need not worry. If there is anything wrong with her child in the future (and yes, I will say the word wrong), it won't be caused by the ultrasound. Enjoy your baby OP. :)
