When is a virus considered worrying?

I am a notorious worrier so I haven’t gone to the GP yet as figured other mums may be able to advise if I’m a drama queen first!

my son is 20 months old, Sunday night he vomited all night, stopped at 6 am. He then slept a lot of the day and didn’t eat a thing but drank lots, had a slight temp too but nothing crazy.

Then Tuesday morning had one bad nappy (diarrhoea). But just wee the rest of the day. Again no food consumed except a single biscuit. But he was asking for all these foods crying, then not eating them, not even touching them. He was very clumsy that day too.
Today he has had 2 biscuits and a cracker at 6 am, and nothing since. 1 wet nappy all day. Still quite sensitive and emotional.

is this normal? Is it just a bug? I expected diarrhoea if it was a bug but he only had one dodgy nappy…

for a bit of background my partner had a bad belly Monday morning. No vomiting and short lived

1 wet nappy all day isn’t enough. Ring 111 for advice, they are better placed to advise on your situation

Call 111

Smartiepants79 · 03/07/2024 17:03

How much is he drinking - do everything you can to get him to drink as much as possible.
Does he still have a fever?
If he is normal temp, no rash and drinking reasonably then I’d just say he’s had a nasty bug and is feeling a bit sorry for himself. An emotional and grumpy toddler is normal for illness. If he’s very lethargic or appears in pain then that’s different.

The complete lack of wet nappies would get me calling 111 tbh

Topjoe19 · 03/07/2024 18:09

The food isn't important as much as fluid. Will he drink? Definitely call 111.

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/07/2024 18:22

I would actually take him to A&E due to the one wet nappy all day. Dehydration can cause serious problems.

Singleandproud · 03/07/2024 18:25

Will he drink or eat ice lollies? Don't worry about the food but the lack of liquids is concerning. The virus isn't an issue and there's not much you can do for it but he may need to be admitted if he is dehydrated.

Ring 111 for advice, this time in the evening I'd pack a quick overnight bag for the two of you just incase they want him to go in.

For vomiting if they were still vomiting after 4 days or I was worried about dehydration (signs to check on NHS website) I would want them seen.

For a high temperature I'd take them in after three days or if it won't come down with medicine you can take them to A&E.

Cough is about 2 weeks you take them in to be seen if it hasn't cleared up.

There is a very useful app by lullaby trust called Baby Check which I like a lot. You put your child symptoms in and it tells you whether to take them to the GP, A&E or ring 111.

gentlemum · 03/07/2024 19:46

Everything you've said says normal for a stomach bug except having only one wet nappy. That isn't enough so I would be seeking medical advice for that

WishingOnACar · 03/07/2024 19:50

I agree with PP - one wet nappy all day is worrying. Did you manage to speak to someone at 111?

Courtsg · 03/07/2024 20:19

Of course I post this and he has now had quite a heavy wet nappy. Given him an ice lolly and he managed to drink some more. So am quite relieved thank you all though! Very helpful x

I'd just watch his blood sugars with the lack of food, or maybe try apple juice or something similar to get some sugars in too.

It isn't something that crossed my mind, it was only dehydration but then my toddler was hospitalised because of low blood sugars. It has since happened to others I know too.
