potty training - what to do next?

DS 2.4 started potty training a week ago. we had a few days of bare bum and no accidents then introduced pants. over the past few days we have only had 2 poo accidents and a wee accident and we have even ventured out a few times. for the past 2 days he has been dry over nap time and last night he was dry and did a big wee in the potty this morning.

i have introduced a sticker chart with a reward when he gets a full day of stickers.

the thing is he is resisting when i ask him to sit on the potty before we go out or before bed. he just says no and starts to tantrum. i dont want to turn it into a battle but i want him to learn to go before we go out and bed to reduce the liklihood of accidents. so what should i do? do i keep persevering and insist he sits or do i leave it and let him learn from any accidents?

Leave it.

ime it takes a long time for children to understand the need for emptying their bladder before they go out. Partly because their understanding of time is limited, and partly because they will not have very sensitised bladder awareness, so if their bladder is only slightly full they will not be getting many (if any) messages up to their brains to go to the loo.

Take a potty (or pottette, much easier) out with you and gently remind (now and again don't go OTT with gazzilions of nags just because you want to avoid an accident while they are out) them about doing a wee or poo.

They will have accidents, they learn from them.
