Need some advice please from people that have actually done potty training
or work in childcare, so confusing reading stuff online.
Little boy is 3 1/2 delayed speech so put off potty training till now.
First day naked from the waist down. Lots of accidents, to be expected went on the potty once at the end of the day.

Second day hes been amazing all wees in the potty knew to go on his own with out much prompting.

How long should they stay naked for? He's in nursery Monday and know thats gonna be to soon for him to be trained
Not able to take a week off work for another month what should we do in the meantime use pull ups or use underpants and send a few changes into nursery?
Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn’t use pull ups other than at night time or itl probably confuse him. I followed a 3 day method so by day 3 they were to wear pants and then I think the trousers were on by day 4. I just put trousers on that were easy to get up and down quickly. We went with a sticker chart and then got desperate and had to resort to a chocolate button for each pee on the potty. He grasped the pee thing quite quickly but still hasn’t fully got the poo situation and we’re months into it. I think if you just keep going until Monday then send a whole load of spares to nursery on Monday he will be fine. They are very used to it so there will most likely be a load of accidents at first but he’ll get used to it. I think putting nappies on will just confuse him though

Try with loose jogging bottoms tomorrow, no need to pants if you think two layers will be too much and do the same for nursery on Monday. If he's making great progress which it sounds like he is then don't revert back to pull ups. After a few days with loose bottoms and him getting the hang of pulling them up and down add pants.

I think the 3 or 7 day methods really only work for a minority of kids, and they're unlikely to be the ones with SEN.

The majority of kids (that I've come across) do it gradually. Still wearing nappies but encourage them to use the potty/toilet. Look out for their cues like hopping around and suggest using the potty. Rewards.

Expect it to take weeks, not days.

This is how dd and all her classmates did it.

I find that really surprising. I don't know anyone who continued using nappies except obviously at night time/naps. Surely using a nappy alongside the toilet just adds confusion and prolongs the process?

When all the children in our antenatal group/friends toddlers were training it genuinely did only take a few days to crack it. Obviously they all had occasional accidents but after 3-4 days most had it sussed.

Also just to add, my son seemed to have nailed it with no pants on in the first couple of days then as soon as the trousers went on he was back to square one. It was like the feeling had changed so suddenly he’d forgot all about it again!

This is how all the class did it. A couple of weeks (at least) still in nappies but pulling them down to use the potty. Nursery were very good at prompting them to go. This minimised accidents as they were more familiar with the potty before wearing pants.

However, they were pretty much all fully trained by 3yo I believe. I know because dd told me which of her friends were still in nappies and when they weren't.

I think trying to force it in 3-4 days would be very stressful for most children. It clearly isn't working for op's ds

Did they train as a class? I've honestly never heard it recommended to still use nappies whilst training?

No one's forcing it that's just how long it roughly took, all the children were trained at approximately 2.5- 3. Also unless I've missed it nothing in the OPs post suggests the strategy she's using isn't working for her child? Confused

We used the Oh Crap book loosely with DD1 and to the letter with DD2. Added loose trousers or shorts after 2-4 days then pants a couple of weeks later (they feel like a nappy). We didn't use pull-ups but with DD1 we used cloth training pants sometimes like on a long journey. DD2 was much easier to train even though she was younger and not speaking much.

Thanks for all the advice everyone so hard to know what to do for the best, hes made great progress already so dont want to go backwards but think I definitely need a week off work to carry on with it. So hard to fit it in when working full time.

@penelopeL thats what happened tonight his little bum was looking sore probably from sitting on the carpet playing (the carpet in one room is a bit rough was down when we moved in) so thought Id put cream on and underpants but soon as he had them on he stopped with the potty, which I totally understand.
It’s probably like a nappy again to them having something on, so I know it was my fault and far to soon.
Which is why I wondered how long you are meant to leave it before putting underpants or pants on. What did you do when it happened?

We are potty training DC (3) at the moment. We use a combination of pull ups and underpants, but he’s been in pull ups for over a year so he’s used to them. Naked didn’t work for him, maybe he was less bothered as he wasn’t getting anything wet, but he just continually peed himself.

FusionChefGeoff · 29/06/2024 23:35

You need to keep going and put him in pants. He will get wet and it will feel very different to being wet in a nappy. They are so absorbent they hardly notice. Wet pants and shorts are much more uncomfortable.

He will soon associate the nasty wet feeling with the needing the toilet feeling.

Get nursery to carry on where you got to. Send him in with lots of pants and spare shorts.

It can take weeks or months for kids to be dry but it's called toilet training for a reason - you have to train them which takes time.

We started training our little one at Easter as had five days off in a row with the bank holidays. We got as far as her being able to wee naked on the potty unprompted. We had two days of it just not woring and me almost giving up thinking she wasnt ready...then suddenly on day three it just seemed to click and no accidents since. We tried progressing to havinf clothes on bottom half but I found as soon as I put anything on her she just would Wet herself and not care. So we used pull ups whilst out and about and then went back to naked at home until I was able to have another solid chunk of time off (which is now) to really work on being trained with clothes on. It's taken a few days again but we're slowly getting it. In the run up to this we've been practicing the skill of pulling our own clothes up and down as she was funding that bit hard.

I think the use of Nappy pants had definitely prolonged the process.. had I had longer we may have cracked it all but the way working schedules and life worked I had to do it this way. It's taken much longer.
