12 month old - 1 cup of milk a day

My 12 month old used to have 3 cups of milk (sippy cups) a day but now only wants one cup a day. Is this ok? She screams and throws the mid day and evening cups of milk. She only drinks 6oz a day but sometimes has maybe 4oz in the evening. She barely drinks water even though I offer this at meal times and throughout the day.

I don't think I've had the slightest clue how much milk my child has drunk each day since he turned one, maybe even before.

There's also calcium in cheeses, yoghurts, greens, chia seeds and sesame seeds.

Nomilkk · 27/06/2024 19:00

@Yourethebeerthief yes she has yoghurt everyday and cheese a couple of times a week. Has her morning cup of milk and some milk in her porridge (breakfast). Loves her vegetables. Maybe she's fine then to drop to one cup of milk.

If she's having other dairy it's no problem. 2-3 servings of dairy a day, either milk to drink or on cereal, plus cheese, yogurt etc all count

Totally fine if having other dairy.

I would try and up her water though, have you tried different cups?

Glittersmoke · 27/06/2024 19:30

My 1yr old is completely dairy free and absolutely fine!

Yes she's absolutely fine. Once solid food was well established I didn't keep an eye on any milk intake. That must have been before one year old. At nearly 3 he just has water available all day and milk as a drink when he specifically asks for it.

My son likes a "hot chocolate" in the evening. It's just warm milk frothed up with a dusting of cocoa powder on top. Other dairy he likes are yoghurt, cheddar, feta, mozzarella, sour cream, creme fraiche, homemade smoothies made with frozen bananas and whole milk. We make porridge with oat milk but then I stir chia seeds and whole milk or gold top into his too. Maybe some ideas there to increase the calcium.

She hates water. She refuses it from her free flow sippy cup, straw, and only takes tiny sips from 360 cup before throwing it. It depends on her mood because some days she'll drink most of her cup but most days she'll only take a few sips. She can use all three types of cup but she just doesn't like water.

My little one hated water at first so I used to buy the heinz apple and blackcurrant 12 months+ water. He all of a sudden decided he didn't like it and now drinks plain water. Maybe try her with something like that because you don't want her getting dehydrated

I just looked it up and they've discontinued it!

@Nomilkk bloody hell, I didn't realise 😅 surely there's a similar thing. I'll have a look and get back to you 😊

Devilsmommy · 29/06/2024 06:54

@Nomilkk can't seem to find anything like it. Would she drink diluted juice? I think it's supposed to be 1 part juice to ten parts water at that age.

RappersNeedChapstick · 29/06/2024 07:02

You can give her lots of water rich foods if she isn't drinking much, so things like melon, jelly, soup, strawberries, broccoli.

There's a good guide to calcium from the BDA. Things like Ready Brek and most sliced, white breads are fortified so don't forget to add those up when you're calculating if she's getting enough.

A lot of discuss replacing calcium if an LO isn't drinking much milk but don't forget that it's important to replace the fat and protein too. So offer things like oily fish (tuna. Salmon, sardines) once or twice a week. Avocados are good too. Basically any good fats are always good Wink

Yourethebeerthief · 29/06/2024 07:02

@Nomilkk

Don't start given her anything other than milk or water. She's only tiny and will be getting part of her water intake from food too. At some point she'll take to the water but not if you start offering her other things.

If she's got wet nappies then she's fine. Keep a couple of different bottles of water around the house for her to have whenever she wants and, for your sanity's sake, stop analysing her fluid intake unless she's not producing wet nappies. In that case seek the advice of your GP for dehydration.

Why not use just a normal cup? Maybe she'll like it more. And if she spills some while drinking, well that's all part of the fun for her.

Yes to this. Watermelon, grapes, soups, oranges, cucumber, plain yoghurt, tomatoes...

Plastic shot glasses were a great novelty here - think I got them in Asda near the spirits 😂 after all they're just tiny cups.

Mummyboy1 · 29/06/2024 07:38

If she is only been offered water and not squash, a good way to increase her intake of water is water play! Quite often they'll end up scooping water in a cup or somthing ans drinking it. In this heat, ice lollies are good to increase fluid intake. Offer water enriched foods, cucumber is very good.

I always recommend the EZPZ cup for learning to drink from an open cup. Same idea as it's small like a shot glass but more weighted. Something magic about it as they just seem to know how to drink out of it immediately in a way they can't with adult sized cups.

Nomilkk · 29/06/2024 08:06

@Devilsmommy very diluted fruit juice might be the way to go to prevent her from being dehydrated and getting constipated.

@RappersNeedChapstick yes she has Ready Brek, veggies, fruit, yoghurt etc and she does plenty of wet nappies so she must be getting enough fluids even though it doesn't seem it.

@Mummyboy1 I'll look into making some ice lollies because she'll love these.

And thank you to everyone else too!
