Hi my 2 year old son is due his 2-2.5 year old development assessment with the health worker soon so I just wanted to ask what to expect? Do I need to prepare anything? What does my son need to be able to do etc.

Thank you in advance. 👍🏻

At our one it was quite long! They go in and there was a mat on the floor with all different toys and they sit and play whilst they ask you questions (I think they sent me the questionnaire beforehand - it was similar to the 9 month check)

They then watch how they interact with the toys etc and ask about nursery or pre-school. They also measure and weigh them. I found it a complete waste of time if I'm honest but I'm sure some people get something out of it!

You can look up the questionnaires online – depending on exact age, it will be the 24, 27 or 30 month ASQ (make sure you find one with the scoring sheet included, they never expect all 'yeses' in a section, usually around 4 out of 6).

Exactly how it goes seems to depend on area. We get posted the questionnaire in advance and then it's a bit of a chat and a quick general observation of the child playing/interacting on the day, plus weight/height. Other places seem to try to get the child to do more of the things on the questionnaire on the spot (which seems ambitious, given the focus time and compliance level of most two-year-olds!).

At 2 it is expected that LO is putting 2 words together ( Daddy car, Teddy drink- thing's like that), is able to build a tower of 4 bricks, demonstrates imitative play eg pretending to drink, fix things etc. It is expected they can drink from an open cup, feed themselves with a sppon and fork, show some awareness of needing a nappy change and follow 2 part instructions without gesture.

Hooe that helps
