Child volunteering ideas?

Does anyone have any suggestions on ways an 8 year old can volunteer aside from raising money or donating things? Ideally something that lets them help someone in a face to face way? I've tried contacting a local care home but they had a policy of not allowing children to volunteer with their residents... I'd really like to get him thinking about people other than himself while also learning gratitude for what he's got!

Grateful for any suggestions...

Litterpicking - in our area you can adopt a street!
Some food banks allow children to volunteer with their parents.

Do you volunteer yourself? I find that my kids always come and volunteer with me, whether that is local events, pta, scouting etc. They have grown up within a family that volunteer a lot so see it as just part of everyday life.

Litter picking is the only sensible option I can think of. Or raising money for a chosen charity.
Whatever it is you’d have to do it with him. He’s a bit too little to really be of any actual help on his own.

Do you go to church at all? We have children welcoming - handing out books and greeting people, taking the collection to the altar, singing in the choir, helping with refreshments after mass etc

Junior Parkrun. Would need to do it with an adult but a great way to get involved

We have pruning volunteers who go out on weekend mornings and prune back overgrown footpaths.

Litter picking too

He's eight. Opportunities for volunteering are going to be somewhat limiting as he's so young and voluntary organisations would be taking on responsibility for his health and safety.

As above, why not take him with you on your volunteering activities?

Junior and big parkrun. I think you need to be there too as she's under 11.

In theory she could work up to run director as a teen.

Thinking about food and not typing properly.

Junior parkrun or big parkrun if he wants to take part in the junior one.
My kids did a fair few with me when they were younger! Lovely atmosphere

Thanks, everyone! These are lovely ideas. He's done a bit of litter picking in the past with his dad and some other kids and their parents but I think it might help if I do it with him a bit more regularly. I've made a list of the other ideas and am looking forward to seeing how many we can do! I used to volunteer - but mainly with the red cross, so not really kid friendly at all! I stopped when I had my other younger two but just need to get myself organised

How about sending him to something like Scouts or the St John's Ambulance youth group (Badgers?). Rhey learn the skills for volunteering in the future.
