Will your six year old stay in bed for 30mins+ before going to bed?

What time are all your 6 year olds going to bed/sleep? DS seems to only need 9 hours of sleep which means he doesn’t go to sleep until 9:30ish and wakes at 6:30ish. This means we don’t get out of his bedroom after stories until well after 9 most nights 🥱 and being pregnant I’m then straight to bed myself with no time at all for myself. Do any of yours read independently or are happy just be in their room for 30mins plus? He’s just wide awake before 9. And isn’t tired in the day so I’m just accepting this is the amount of sleep he needs. What time do your 6 year olds go to sleep and will they stay for long periods of time in their room without you? If so - how do you do it?? Help! - and yoto never worked for us, I’ve given up on it. He’s a good reader though just won’t read in his own. How can I encourage this without putting him off reading?

Mine reads and listens to an audio book. Loves it.

Our 6 year old DS goes to bed at 7. He will read with us or lie in bed listening to his Yoto box and generally falls asleep in about 20 minutes. The latest he goes to bed is about 7:45 on Thursday and Friday when he does Beavers and Judo. If he wakes up early he will either listen to his Yoto or look at books. He's normally up about 6:30.

Buy him a torch. Send him to bed early (if necessary change the clocks to get him into bed at 8pm that day). Find an excuse to finish reading in the middle of a chapter at 8.30ish. Say goodnight and tell him not to spend too long playing with his new torch.

Mine is 7 and rarely asleep before 8.30-9pm. She gets in to bed at 8 with lights off and usually sings to herself until she falls asleep. I need at least an hour in the evenings to decompress without children around so no chance would I let her up later

I'm very jealous of those that go to bed at 7 - if he was asleep though he'd be up before 5. He is good at staying in his bed in the mornings until 6 though but I'm not sure if it was for that long. Ok, so I can I encourage him to read independently? He tells me the words are too small on the books he likes to read himself.

DD is 6 and goes to bed around 8.30, we read stories and listen to music and she's asleep by 9pm. Has had this bedtime since she was 3 and it works for her. We've never really tried leaving her to get to sleep on her own, but the reading is part of her homework so we have to listen to her read every day. DH tends to do bedtime (I put our younger child to bed) so he's happy to have that time with her as he's been at work.

Thanks, your evenings sound very similar to ours (we aim for 9pm!). It's good to know not all six year olds are asleep at 7:30 and/or reading to themselves. It's just tough when I'm so tired from pregnancy!

All of mine including the youngest who is nearly 6, go up before they go to sleep. The 6 year old at 7.30 then after stories he can look at books, play etc. The older two go around 8.
