dry pailing vs wet pailing

Apologies if this has been done to death but I couldn't see a recent post.

I'm pregnant with my first and committed to using cloth nappies but just wondering whether I should go with dry-pailing or wet-pailing. The plan would be to wash nappies every two days.

Would appreciate hearing other people's advice/experiences.

Dry pail. If you wet pail, you trail water all down the front of the machine when you transfer them in. THat said, I did used to wet pail a bit when the DDs were little and had yellow runny poo. Much easier when they are bigger with solid poos you can flush away.

LilRedWG · 09/04/2008 13:40

Definitely dry pailing. Also, use a bucket net, that way you just pick up the mesh net open and put in the washing machine - no need to handle the nappies at all.

ds now potty trained but we dry pailed.so much less messy and easier.im lazy and wet nappies were heavy!

Thanks for quick replies - I've got a mesh bag for my nappy bucket. Any downsides of dry pailing or things to be aware of?

Dry pail!! With bucket net!!!

LilRedWG · 09/04/2008 13:43

Not that I'm aware of. I also wash every second day.

onepieceoflollipop · 09/04/2008 13:45

Tried wet pailing in the early days - only did it twice, the smell was far worse! If we have a very pooey nappy now I hold it in flush of loo, or pour jug of water over it while it is in the loo.

My top tip for dry pailing - get a damp muslin or large flannel, sprinkle with 5-6 drops of lavender oil. Drape this cloth over the top of the bucket contents. Tis brilliant. Also keep bucket in the coolest place possible - ours was initially a bit near the radiator

piggyp · 09/04/2008 13:47

dry pail and do a cold rinse in the machine first! Your nappies should have some instructions too.

bitofadramaqueen · 09/04/2008 13:48

Thanks for those tips - need to get back to work now but all advice greatfully appreciated.

I dry pailed, did nothing exciting, washed when the bucket was full and had no problems .

feetheart · 09/04/2008 20:15

Wet pailed with DD, dry pailed with DS. Dry pailing MUCH better - less smelly, less heavy, less yucky all round

Nappyzone · 09/04/2008 21:17

Dry pail - poo soup is sooooooooooo unnecessary and my spelling is cr** i know!

bitofadramaqueen · 09/04/2008 21:19

Thanks everyone - dry pailing it is then! Hi pp - I got a nappy bucket and mesh bag (which is the perfect size for it) from nappy lady if you're interested.

how interesting. i wet pail. may have to give dry pailing a go. is the hamster smell thing not an issue then? and do the poos stains come out? (ds weaned)

(am seriously interested rather than being sarcastic)

bitofadramaqueen · 09/04/2008 21:26

nappyzone I see from another thread that you're in the know when it comes to nappies. I've got some totsbots bamboozles, how many times would you recommend pre-washing them before use?

Is hijacking your own thread allowed ?

OP posts:
Nappyzone · 09/04/2008 21:31

bamboo nappies are recommended to be washed at least 3 times and then absorbancy increases up to approx ten washes then they rock absorbancy wise (i have however never owned a bamboozle but bambinex which are v similar!)

bitofadramaqueen · 09/04/2008 21:32

thanks!

missorinoco: I find that wet pailing is far more smelly than dry pailing, honestly.

As for stains, sunshine seems to be the one main thing that helps, regardless of whether you wet pail, dry pail or rinse the poo off before putting in the bucket. Also as time goes on I am less worried as to whether the nappies are "sparkling" - as long as they are clean.

missorinoco · 10/04/2008 09:56

thankyou. i shall give it a go....

bitofadramaqueen · 10/04/2008 13:34

cheers mammatulip - that's really helpful, I would have assumed that they had to be dried between washes otherwise.

Am bizarrely a bit excited about using my real nappies, although wish some people wouldn't feel the need to be really anti-cloth and tell me I'll soon change my mind!

i use cloth ones on both mine but only started about 4-5 months ago & you soon get the hang of it. once i decided to use them i was like you & excited & could'nt wait to start. i love them so much more then disposibles. i dry pail also, have tried wet but its a hassle for nothing
