Help! 16 week old now crying excessively

Hi all. My 16 week old little boy (first child) has been an absolute blessing. He slept through the night from about 7 weeks old. He is formula fed and burps well. We never had an issues with him crying, before two days ago...
He has started hysterically crying for no apparent reason. And when I say hysterical, I mean it is unbelievable.
He still feeds and burps well. He has plenty of wet nappies and he does not appear constipated either.
He doesnt have a temperature.
He isn't teething from what we can see as he doesn't have flushed cheeks anor red gums.
He still sleeps through the night, so I didn't think it was sleep regression either. He also gets good naps 4 times a day as a minimum of around an hour each time.
Initially when he wakes up, he seems happy, but it doesn't take long for him to get unhappy again.
We try distracting him with walks in his stroller, walks in our back garden in our arms, toys, and other things. Sometimes we just trying and give him cuddles and rock him gently, but he just screams. He isn't bringing his legs up either, so I didn't think it was wind and I know at nearly 4 months, he shouldn't really be having those issues anyway (not that he did before).
I just don't know what else to try. Any thoughts???

Very small chance I'm sure but he doesn't have a hair wrapped around a finger or toe at all..? I remember a health professional recommending me to check that at one point with one of mine.

Just checked and no hair at all....

Ear infection? Try holding a warm compress over his ears to see it if calms him?

Look up 'wonder weeks' there are some predictable ages when babies go through weird patches and 4 months is one of them.

It a development milestone and tends to include fussiness, change in appetite, change in sleep and growth spurts.

It doesn't help to stop the crying but I found it does help to know that it's expected behaviour.

It probably is teething. They move around a lot inside before you can actually see anything. Try some ambosol liquid on the gums.

That's from 5 month only.

Vaccinations?

I've called 111 and they think it is possible reflux. Thank you all for your suggestions. I've given him some calpol this evening to try and help and it calmed him until he had his bottle and then about 20 mins after, he was upset again 🥺
Luckily, it isn't an easy infection, but again, thank you for the suggestion.
I will read that article about the milestones too, so thank you again for the recommendation.
The doctor also gave me this link to look at, which was also helpful when reading about the reflux: https://www.what0-18.nhs.uk/worried-your-baby-unwell-under-3-months-2/worried-about-your-baby/my-baby-crying-excessively
Just in case anyone was interested 💕

This is literally me right now. My baby has cried 40 minutes straight tonight. He is just over 4 months. Its like the newborn colic all over again. Ever since turning 4 months he has been incredibly fussy. Have things gotten easier for you?

Snowdrops17 · 29/08/2024 20:26

Has to be pain no ? I've seen this with my niece turned out to be an ear infecrion . Have you given calpol to see if it helps ?

Briocheloaf · 29/08/2024 22:07

I second the suggestion of an ear infection @CM327509

Yes things have gotten so much easier! Honestly, it must have been a phase. There was no ear infection, no illness, no wind, no teething, NOTHING. He just turned into a cry demon. But now he is all giggles and playful at 6months 💕
