Hi right my lo is 6 months has awful eczema on stomach back legs back sides under neck been to doctors 3 times
Given double base didn't work went back got given nothing went back got given zerobase and hydrocortisone I'm not keen on using steroid cream but zero base isn't really working we put it on she screams and it's horrible now we have seen it can be cuased by what she having she's currently on kendamil goats milk as we had to go from cow and gate to hipp due to constipation and reflux any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

My son has eczema and it only started when we changed him to cow & gate milk. He then went onto Kendamil and it wasn't quite as bad.
He's now just over 2 and we have no idea what causes the flare ups.

The only cream that helps him is Epaderm. He also has Fucidin-H if there are any bits that may be starting to get infected and Elacon for any really bad places that need more than the Epaderm can sort. He's supposed to be on Oilatum bath but they prescribe it in such small quantities that we can't use it much.

Twinkletwinklelil · 22/06/2024 05:53

Bathe less frequently, cotton clothing, moisturise well but ensure baby is dry from the moisturiser before adding clothes and dry from water before doing the moisturiser. Oilatum I definitely recommend, as well as aveeno and child’s farm.
use a steroid only for flare ups and sparingly.
eczema is awful my ds has it and I’ve had it my whole life. I send my sympathies x

Epaderm might have to try it ointment or is it the cream? And thank you for the advice

We tend to only use 100 % cotton bath every other day but child farm seems to give same reaction double base did bright red makes her scream zerobase seems to work but not if that makes sense her skin feels dryer when using it we have also been using vaseline buy I'm starting to think it maybe the goats milk but as I've read goats milk tends to help baby's with eczema

My DS developed eczema too. We tried everything the dr prescribed but nothing worked. I used Aveeno which made a slight improvement. I also didn't use soap to wash him with but used muslin bags and filled with oats. In the end we went on Cyprus one year and bought a volcanic cream which got rid of it completely! I was able to get it from Amazon when we got back.

VoteyMacVoteFace · 22/06/2024 09:26

There are lots of different emollients out there, keep going back to your gp to try different ones till you find one that works best. Different emollient suit different people, what works for one may not for others.

Unfortunately there is a lot of trial and error with eczema treatments.

We bathe daily because ds' eczema is triggered by airborne allergies so we need to keep his skin clean. But we was with water and a scoop of ointment, not soap or body wash.

What washing powder do you use? We use ecover zero, and never any fabric softener.

We use steroids sparingly - for ds it is the only thing that cures a flare, the risk is low if used under medical supervision. Hydrocortisone is a very weak steroid so personally I wouldn't worry about using it occasionally.

Every other day may be a lot.. we really reduced our baths and it helped massively.
showering and bathing really dries out your skin.
just a thought x

@Dusty45 sorry, the epaderm you asked about yesterday is ointment.

We only bath our son twice a week as the water really affects his skin. We also have real trouble getting nursery to understand that letting him play in the water tray every time he's there is a problem.

@Dusty45 fingers crossed it helps. My son's eczema isn't as bad now (he's 2) as it was when it first started when he was a few months old. He has flare ups but it's so difficult to pin down what causes that.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 22/06/2024 17:03

We found salcura bioskin junior outbreak cream worked miracles when the kids were babies. Anything vaseline / paraffin based always seemed to just sit on top of the skin and most of the common emollients seem to have it in. I had heard great things about the childs farm one and unfortunately it didn't help, but as a previous poster said, it depends on the skin type. What works for one child won't for another.

Boobymonster · 23/06/2024 10:59

We got our LOs eczema under control once we saw a specialist allergy paediatrician. Went private as the NHS wait list was several months despite our baby have a known Ige egg allergy and other potential allergies. The doctor told us to go hard with a steroid (2 x a day for 5 days, 1 x a day for next 5 days then 2 x a week to top up), then on top of that we applied zero base ointment morning and night, and zero derma emollient every nappy change. We do the moisturising routine every day and steroid only when needed with a flair now. You can’t over moisturise an eczema baby! We also add dermol 600 bath stuff (prescribed by the doctor) to his baths which is anti microbial rather than just moisturising. His skin is basically clear following this regime, with the odd flair up which is quickly contained with the steroid. I was very worried about applying steroids but ultimately that is probably what made the biggest difference, and tapering down carefully to just twice a week as going cold turkey can cause a rebound reaction.

FizzyStream · 23/06/2024 11:27

You could do with getting a dermatology referral. Sometimes they will prescribe Protopic 0.03% which is not a steroid but GPs won't prescribe it as it isn't strictly licensed for that purpose. It works though.

Cradle cap- oil massage before bath (we used baby oil, tried everything else really didn’t work) then comb it in all directions.
wash with weleda shampoo (also fine for eczema)
brush in all directions

it was the only thing that helped us. It was so bad just wouldn’t go away. Even the strong er treatments did nothing but the gentle oil massage and brushing / combing regularly really helped and it was gone so fast!!
