Should I hold off giving baby antibiotics?

DS is 10 months old and this week has been producing lots of snots (first clear then turned a bit greenish) and coughing from time to time. He doesn't have a fever, and has been eating and playing normally. Took him to the GP on Wednesday and the doctor thinks there's a bit of infection (throat and ear drums a bit red), so prescribed antibiotics just in case. Said if he suddenly develops a temperature then give antibiotics. Or if he still has greenish snots on Friday then give antibiotics. DS still has greenish snots today but a bit less than before. Wonder if we should hold off giving him antibiotics? His dad thinks it's just a cold so antibiotics may not work anyways. Has anyone had similar experience please? Thanks!

I would follow what the GP said and give the antibiotics.

Follow the GP, give the antibiotics

Follow the medical advice. Is your DH medically trained?

Thanks all. We'll give him the antibiotics then.

If your child is too young (or in my DS’s case, too disabled) to be able to tell you what’s wrong, always err on the side of caution.

I'm going against the grain here but I'd wait till morning. At this stage you've waited all day so there'll only be one dose today anyway.

See how he is overnight

If the GP has said to start the antibiotics if DS suddenly develops a fever and/or is still producing green snot by today, I’d start them. GPs are so reluctant to prescribe them, especially to infants, that I think they must think they’re justified.

Thanks! Yeah just read the instructions on the antibiotics. It needs to be given one hour before food or two hours after. DS has just had his evening milk feed and gone to sleep, so we'll give the antibiotics first thing after he wakes up in the morning.
