CMPA? *Graphic Poo Pic!*

Hi all - hoping someone can help!

My DD is 4 weeks old and I'm becoming concerned about a couple of symptoms she has and wondering if she's developing or has a sensitivity to her milk. She is formula fed on Cow & Gate Stage 1 and since birth her nappies have had some mucus - I phoned the midwife who said she's still clearing out from birth but 4 weeks in she's still got it and the following:

  • Hiccups A LOT after feeds
  • Screams when trying to pass wind
  • I think has silent reflux (I hear her gulp and then gets unsettled)
  • Arches back and gets cross during feeds even with a lot of winding
  • Dry skin on her forehead
  • Spotty looking rash on chin and neck (but this could just be where she dribbles milk out)
  • Very snuffly and sneezes often

She's gaining weight fine, and isn't hugely unhappy but she can often get very upset after a feed and screams with nothing being able to comfort her.

Should I speak to the GP? I've read that they really don't take it seriously so long as the baby is gaining weight, but I hate to think she's in pain ☹️

Thanks in advance to anyone who can share their thoughts

Currently going through a screaming session and nothing will help her, fed about 2 hours ago... anyone have any ideas?

My wee one was on c&g and had horrible nappies etc, Dr thought she had cmpa so was put on prescription milk but this bunged her up and made her so uncomfortable. I've since taken her off that as per drs advise and put her on HIPP and she's so much better and more settled. Might be worth still speaking to your Dr or health visitor or giving another milk a try.

@Jb2189

Thank you for replying, everybody I've spoken to (midwife & HV) have said not to change her milk but I really think something has to give! I've heard HIPP is the only one that's actually any different so I think I'll try it. Hopefully it doesn't mess up her tummy any more poor thing.

My little one was like this I took him to gp who prescribed althera formula, huge improvement within a couple of weeks, hes now 4 and has almost completed the dairy ladder with the exception of full fat milk and cream. Definitely try gp ( I tried hv but she told me to go straight to gp) hope this helps x

@onwardandupwards

Did your LO's nappies look similar? Was it an intolerance in the end? She's just so uncomfortable and upset but it isn't every feed which is what confuses me.

Glad to hear you managed the milk ladder!

Sounds like my 5 week old little girl. I raised this with the health visitor at 4 weeks she was very much fobbed off. We changed her to comfort formula to see if that would help, it didn’t. Made a GP appointment last week which we had this morning, the GP genuinely seemed annoyed at the HV for not doing something about this when I raised. Were now prescribed nutramigen and have a follow up appointment in 2 weeks to check on things as she may need medication for reflux. The GP wants to try the formula for a while see if it helps the reflux so I’m happy with that.

Just bypass the HV and get an appointment.

Defo speak to your GP. After we got taken off the prescription milk (nutramigin) we did try going back to the c&g and had to take her off after 2 feeds as her nappies were like yours pictured. I done quite a bit of research and HIPP seemed to have the best reviews for babies who were having issues with normal formula.

@SarahB88

Hopefully my GP takes it seriously then... have you seen any difference in your little one or is it too soon? Were you having problems after every feed or was it just some? Sorry for the questions but just so lost!

@Jb2189

Thanks, that's good to know. Can I ask whether they ruled out an intolerance for you? Or did you just see no improvement on the prescription milk?

@sickandsleepy We’ve actually been using the nutramigen for a week as I bought some before our appointment because I couldn’t bear to have her in such pain and discomfort and things are definitely getting better. Her rash is gone and she isn’t suffering with as much painful trapped wind. She’s still congested, arching her back etc though but it seems that they may take a little longer to improve.

The nappies are a little hit and miss, no dirty nappy yesterday but the day before she had 3 good normal poos. Today she’s had 2 very watery poos and 1 normal one. Looks the same colour as the one you posted.

Overall she’s much happier and settled in herself though. I do suspect reflux though as she’s impossible to lie flat in her next to me and we end up with her sleeping on my chest which is absolutely not ideal.

We have to go back to cows milk formula in a couple of weeks to check if the symptoms still persist so I’m not looking forward to that. Her dad had CMPA as a baby too so we thought there’d be a good chance she would get it.

onwardandupwards · 21/06/2024 21:18

Yes it was CMPA he had, his nappies looked quite similar and some were explosive, he was very uncomfortable and would scream for hours. I tried infacol, changing bottles, ect but in the end him having a prescription milk was the only thing that worked x

sickandsleepy · 21/06/2024 21:20

@SarahB88

I suspect there's some reflux going on with my LO too- such a vicious circle though as I've read the reflux meds constipate them more so it's lose lose! Hopefully it works out for you and you manage to find the right solution for your little one

@sickandsleepy The GP has assured me today that there’s things they can try for reflux that won’t cause constipation so I’m hoping that’s true!
