(smug) I potty trained both mine very quickly with no real problems. I found NO nappy to be the best way. That's why I did both mine in the summer months. Only took a day or two. How old is your ds? Can you wait a few months?

agree no nappy when potty training as it is sort of the whole point..lol However will say both ds and dd1 showed signs of being aware but I left it a few months after that to actually train.Ds was 2.3yrs and dd1 was 2 the week before both came completely out of nappies in the day and dd1 also dropped her night nappy, ds took a couple of months after being dry in the day..DD2 now 15mths will sit on the potty and has weed on it a couple of times but there is no way in hell she is near ready to train.

Hi fairy15

Now, I'm a Granny, so I don't claim to be a modern expert, but babies don't recognise new or old theories! I can only tell you what has worked best with my 3 kids and 3 of my 7 grandchildren.

Decide on the day you're going to start, and make sure you don't have too much on socially that week. Tell LO that now he's a big boy he'll be out of nappies and in big boys' pants (have a supply of easy-wash thin ones). Pop them on him first thing and put him on the potty or toilet every half hour, with suggestions of having a wee.

He'll wet sometimes, but without a nappy, he'll soon get the message of cause and effect. Calmly change and dry him, put on dry pants and reinforce that this was a little accident but he'll get the idea soon. Don't worry how many times this happens.

As the week goes on, he'll get used to the regular feel of the potty on his botty and a reflex will happen...he'll wee when you put him on!

Most kids of 2 and over will respond well to this, and my grand-daughter was able to go out in my car for short distances within the first week without wetting.

Wearing a nappy or any absorbent pants will weaken the message that " If I wee I'll get wet". Bowel training is another story, but your lo seems ready, so Good Luck!

I agree with the above. We started our dd this morning!
We have just bought a couple of packs of 10 cheap pants from Mothrcare (£12 for 20) and this morning we threw the nappies in the bin and put pants on her. We have said that if she needs a wee she must go on the potty or the loo like her big sistr.
Today we have hads loads of accidents but also 2 successes so that was great. .
I also agree that nappies are confusing and make the whole thing take longer.
This worked for our other 2 dcs pretty quickly!
We have, however cancelled all outings 'til the middle of next week - which is pretty dull for our elder dcs but i felt it would be impossible to work the early stages of potty training around the school run. Luckily dh is home this week so we are taking it in turns to go out with the big ones (that way i wont be sent stir crazy!)

Good luck fairy15! Both mine were nearer to 3 than 2 when we started so hope it goes smoothly for you.

Btw, would you consider briefs instead of shorts? Might be more chance of catching a poo in a pair of briefs - and therefore less "damage" to the trousers - than wide-legged shorts iyswim?

Also, briefs will be cheaper than boxers. Try primark or tesco.

character pants were an ENORMOUS hit with ds and he used to say very seriously, "it's ok lofty/thomas/spidey there'll be no wee wees on you!"

do consider buying undies a size up as they'll be easier to pull up and down.

(and don't stress if it doesn't happen, he's still very little!)

fairy15 · 08/04/2008 21:15

oooo yes good idea i'll go for some little pants. saw some thomas & noddy ones in the sale the other day so hopefully they will still be there. i'll see how he gets on & if its not happening for him i'll try again in a few months.

I've been potty training 2 weeks - cautiously optimistic so far but then he is 2.7. I've packed up all the reusables except about five for night nappies, daytime using normal pants.

I have a couple of pairs of Bright Bots pants (moderately absorbent) for times like going to other peoples' houses - when they look worriedly at carpets and say "you have put him in a pull-up haven't you?"

General MN wisdom seems to be - no going back into nappies (except night) once you've started.

fairy15 · 08/04/2008 21:23

oh really, suppose that would confuse him. should i keep nappies on at night & take it off first thing?

boxers may be a good idea. boy is OK when he goes comando, but pants seems to be to much like a nappy and too hard to get off quickly. in just shorts hes fine. just turned 2, been nappy free all day since sunday. Had had lots of bare bum time before then.
