Anyone help explain these allergy test results ?

Hi my DS when weaning had instant reaction to milk, hives all on the face and a more mild rash to egg , we was told to cut them out by paediatric dr at the hospital and come back at 18 month. Which we did last week, he had a blood test and today have received a letter which says the results were ‘good’ and to start the milk and egg ladder. But it was otherwise quite vague and didn’t really explain what the results meant. Can anyone assist or link to some guidance?

Total lgE 15
lgE to egg white 0.1
Egg yolk 0.10
Cow milk 0.44

Also I once read you shouldn’t do the milk ladder if the reactions were instant, am I mistaken ?

Thanks in advance

Why not take the Dr's advice?

Charlotteap · 19/06/2024 21:09

@RedHelenB i am not sure what you are replying to? I am going to start the ladder, in fact already have thus following the drs advice ?

I’m not sure about the individual scores as it’s been so long since dd had the tests but I think the total score can be as high as in the thousands. I remember she had a total score of like 800 and is still allergic so I think 15 total means fairly low I think

CadyEastman · 19/06/2024 22:28

There's a table on page 6 of this document that seems to suggest that anything less than 0.35 is considered not an allergy?

CadyEastman · 19/06/2024 22:28

I'm not sure if that means that they could be non-Ige though?

Bobbybobbins · 19/06/2024 22:32

Not sure about the numbers but my DS had exactly the same with milk and egg when weaning. As I was bf I considered cutting out dairy but decided not to so he had some exposure. We were lucky that he grew out of the allergies.

Charlotteap · 20/06/2024 11:30

@Lauren0401 thank you that is helpful

@CadyEastman thank you that’s exactly what I am after like the thresholds. So his 0.44 would be slightly above. Unfortunately the link doesn’t work for me though!

@Bobbybobbins thank you I exclusive bf too and the dr said to continue as we didn’t notice until he weaned so didn’t think I was causing him harm. Fingers cross mine is outgrowing too did you have to do the ladders?

@Charlotteap

Yes we did the ladders one at a time. By 13 months he had no reactions to either. His main symptom was terrible eczema

Charlotteap · 20/06/2024 11:35

@Bobbybobbins thank you we started on the egg yesterday and no reactions but more worried about the milk but like yourself will do one at a time. My DS gets really bad eczema too!

With immediate allergies the ladders shouldn't be attempted until you have been directed to do so because the tests show that the allergy is now lower risk and slow gradual exposures to the allergen will show how much can be tolerated before a reaction is seen

Charlotteap · 20/06/2024 15:42

@Superscientist thank you that is very helpful.

  • Values under 0.35 mean unlikely sensitization to the allergen.
  • Values between 0.35-0.69 mean doubtful significance.
  • Values between 0.70-3.49 mean there is a possibility.
  • Values between 3.50-17.49 mean a greater possibility.
  • Values between 17.50-49.99 mean very likely.

At those numbers I think it’s very low allergy or non at all

As a comparison Ds first blood test for peanut he was 42. Anything over 18 is automatic epipen here. His levels have dropped over 3 years and his last one was 9. He still reacts at that level but his reaction was throwing up projectile after about 1/4 peanut v any breathing issues now.

His pollen and grass allergy levels are at 80 and 100+ though. But that’s a different type of allergy I think as environmental rather than food.

He has loads of small scale things under 0.40 on blood tests ie similar to your results and the doctor doesn’t classify them as needing to avoid at all ( I can’t actually remember what they are but there’s about 30 of them)

QuiltedHippo · 20/06/2024 16:00

If it's reassuring my child completed both milk and dairy ladders at home with instant/IGE allergies, under the paediatric allergy team. Their rarer allergies e.g. fish, without ladders we did food challenges in hospital. Hope it goes well

Wonkywinky · 20/06/2024 16:02

Less than 0.35 is normal

Charlotteap · 20/06/2024 19:21

@Caspianberg thank you so so much for explaining all that , that’s exactly what I was looking for! And really is so very helpful , much appreciated
