Why is my 15month old inconsolably screaming?

Please help me figure out whats going on with DS....

He's 15 months old, has always been a good sleeper. Last Thursday was sent home from childminders with a temperature, was a bit off his food but was happily plodding round the house playing. Thursday night he wouldn't settle in bed, he was bunged up and had a fever but would sleep on me and DH slightly upright on the sofa.

Friday and Saturday much of the same, but managed to break the fever Saturday and temp has been fine ever since.

Sunday he seems better in himself, napped as usual during the day but when it came to bed time he went down fine only to wake up half an hour later inconsolably screaming, not just a cry like a full on scream, nothing would soothe him and after 1.5 hours we called 111 and got told to take him to the hospital.

Took him up there and got him checked over, they said they think its just from whatever viral infection he had the last few days but his cough sounded possibly a bit "croupy" so gave him the steroids just in case.

He was exhausted yesterday after being so late to bed from the hospital the night before, so put him to bed early and lo and behold half hour after being asleep he's screaming again. We had to put him in the car and drive round for an hour to get him to calm down.

We've been giving him Calpol at bedtime as hes cutting molars, so that should be helping him but I don't know what else to do. When he wakes up screaming its like he doesn't even know i'm there to comfort him. I thought maybe it was night terrors but everything I've read says he would only be screaming for 15 mins or so? I'm at a loss.

We are going through the same thing
called 111. Saw someone. Ruled out any scary stuff.. definitely teething for us. It’s hell. On day 4 and can’t wait for these teeth to come through.
nurofen was recommended x

YouBoggleMyMind · 18/06/2024 22:53

Nurofen for teeth and lots of love and reassurance. Could be a bit of separation anxiety too.

You can give him baby ibuprofen as well (up to three doses a day). My 16 months old is cutting molars and has a cold. Calpol alone hasnt been enough, shes either not managed to get to sleep or woken up shortly after telling me she’s in pain (she signs) and crying.

I always post this on these threads, but have you checked for a hair tourniquet?

It could be teething or possibly a sore throat or ears secondary to a virus. I would give Nurofen tonight (much better for teething than calpol) and make a GP appointment for another check up in the morning

Earache? The only time this happened to me my baby ended up with a perforated ear drum. Maybe go back to the GP.

Earache. At 20 months his middle ear is structurally prone to congestion and raised pressure. When he lies flat it is extremely painful, when he is vertical the pain subsides. Things that help are anti-inflammatories, painkillers and decongestants - some might need to be prescribed, so calling 111 might be a way of getting an appointment. Meanwhile raise the head of the cot/try and keep him propped up. Little children with earache are fine when vertical and scream with pain as soon as they lie flat.

Thank you all, luckily it didn't happen last night but he did wake at 2am coughing and then was up for 2 hours, but I'll take that over the screaming. I didn't realise teething could be quite this intense, he struggled with his first top 2 teeth really badly but absolutely nothing like this.

@DysmalRadius Good suggestion, we already checked him over top to toe looking for rashes etc and there wasn't anything luckily
