Cranial osteopath for newborn

Hi all, I wondered if anyone has had experience with taking their baby to a cranial osteopath? And how long before you saw results?

My little one is 6 weeks old and has started displaying colic symptoms in the evenings and has a preference for positioning his head a certain way.
He had a shoulder dystocia at birth and I can't help but feel all these things are connected.
Any shared experiences welcome ...

I can only speak to my own experience of cranial osteopathy - it's bloody brilliant for me, relieves a lot of pain and prevents migraines. My practitioner is very light touch but he's bloody magic I swear. He came highly recommended, is very senior in his field and has long waiting lists.

I wasn't sure about it but in desperation tried with our3rd, seemed to help quite a bit with both latch and burping.

Have you ruled out CMPA
(We aren't baby cows....)

It was brilliant for my son. He went from a ball of tension to lying like a flattened frog in front of my face. Glad I took my mum otherwise I would think I'd dreamt it.

Yes I did it and I'm very sceptical. DD also had shoulder dystocia and was very colicky. It did make a difference

Why do you think she'd done something special to "realign" him by barely touching him, rather than just having a knack for calming and relaxing babies?

PrimalLass · 28/07/2024 18:53

No idea but he was a very difficult and stressed baby that his mum and grandma couldn't settle like that.

He also had a bump on his forehead from a forceps delivery that seemed to recede.

TBH something worked so I don't care what.

My point is that he was unsettled in between these sessions and you and your mother couldn't settle him. But this woman could. Then between sessions he was unsettled again.

Cranial osteopaths take money for something they are not doing and are simply skilled at handling babies and calming them. For the ones that it doesn't "work" on it doesn't matter, they go once or twice then never go back. For desperate mothers having a hard time whose babies it does "work on" they keep coming back and funding these people.

Over the duration of these sessions the newborn grows and settles into themselves anyway. Things improve and would have improved regardless. Babies are suddenly out of the womb and it takes a while for their bodies to get used to the world and for their little digestive tracts to develop.

There has never been a baby "cured" of something by this. All that happens is mothers part with money during the time their babies are naturally developing and settling into themselves anyway.

Recommending it to other desperate mothers only further peddles this nonsense. I speak from experience. I was desperate too and tried it. She also pulled the one leg longer than the other bullshit on me and realigned me by barely touching me. She came highly reviewed. It's utter bollocks.

I didn't say that - so no. **

You took him once, she joggled him about a bit, then he was fine forever and you continued to go back?

PrimalLass · 28/07/2024 19:38

No he was massively better after one session and then I went back for another.

As I said - I don't care why it worked or whether you believe me. The OP asked for feedback.

I don't disbelieve that you think it worked.

It's quackery and I'm astonished that they seemed to have cornered a market with newborns. Unfortunately at our local hospital there was a member of staff recommending the local craino osteopath. They seem to have somehow hoodwinked maternity wards. I'm related through marriage to a guy who is very high up in the world of cranio. In fact he's basically responsible for the break through market into baby treatments and can tell you in no uncertain terms he's a complete charlatan. It's just shouldn't be allowed.

Thatsnotmynose · 28/07/2024 21:06

I was also recommended it by a health visitor. I asked for a metaanalysis of research that showed effectiveness. She went quiet and then said she knew people who seemed to think it would help. Sure let's get desperate mums to fork out on people waving hands about. Or...we could get qualified tongue tie practitioners and far more accurate advice about allergies.

Mine went for poor latch as they didn't open their mouths wide enough, it helped after the first treatment and I think they only went twice each? I had rapid deliveries.

Friend took her c-section baby that just winged and cried 24/7 apart from when he sometimes slept. He was transformed after the 1st treatment and again only had a few more session. He'd been very squashed at an angle and the Drs had been concerned that he had a fused skull at first. Reckon must have had one hell of a headache!

Hi, sorry to jump on this thread but my little girl is possibly having the same issue - very quick delivery and latch isn’t the best, she gets plenty of milk and is gaining weight but she takes in air when she feeds and makes a clicking sound trying to re-latch, causing my nipples to get a bit sore. I had an appointment for possible tongue tie today and they said no problem there but suggested craniosacral therapy or osteopathy to help her open her mouth wider as she watched us feed and said she isn’t taking enough breast tissue in. Could you tell me more about your experience please? Thanks so much!

Find another person to assess tongue tie and go to a paediatric physio if you suspect any neck or alignment issues.

RandomMess · 10/01/2025 14:35

I'm not sure what more I can say one of my DC had tongue tie and division improved things as did the cranial osteopathic treatment but she still never took in enough breast tissue for it not to be painful. She was getting plenty of milk and thriving as a 98th centile chunk.

The next 2 also has a painful latch which the cranial osteopathic treatment "cured" in a treatment.

All 3 were big babies with rapid deliveries, the last one recorded as a 1 minute labour as I went 8cm, crowned, delivered in 2/3 contractions.
