Hi, my son keeps not pooing for 3-4 days and seems so sad and sometimes very uncomfortable trying to toilet. I've been seeing the comfort milk did this help anyone and does it work with the prep machine? And he has the tommee tippee colic bottles?

What age is your son? It can be quite normal for formula fed babies to be constipated as the formula can be thick and takes a little while for their digestive system to work.
My health visitor didn’t recommend using the comfort milk unless my baby was screaming in pain.
Have you tried giving him a little stomach massage and doing bicycle legs? I find giving my baby a pre made bottle usually helps get him going as they are quite thin.

The prep machine does work with the comfort milk, it’s just created the same way as your other bottles. Another thing to do is make sure you’re up to date with cleaning your prep machine.

Is the prep machine new? Does it need cleaning / A new filter?

Beanieton · 11/06/2024 05:25

The prep machines aren't recommended as they don't consistently heat the water hot enough to kill the bacteria present in the formula powder. The NHS advises not to use them and tests done have shown that they don't get as hot as they claim.

As another poster has said, constipation is common in formula fed babies. Bath, bicycle legs, tummy massage and ready to feed can all help.

He's 6 weeks tomorrow, I thought he had infant dyschezia but today after 4 days he pooed and there was a big lump rather than his old soft poo. I've done massages and bath him when he seems in distress but nothing seems to work. The doc prescribed lactulose but he even had that for 2 days and finally on the 3rd it helped him, he loves his milk so I'm worried to change and make things worse and I'm also wondering if he has silent reflux, he's gaining weight well and enjoys food but he gags in his sleep (he was c section) so I thought it was normal but in the morning he seems unhappy. I'm 1 lost new mummy lol x

Obviously don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet etc but what worked for my daughter was an ounce of cool boiled water whenever she was constipated at that age.

The tummy rubs helped sometimes and everytime we change him we do the bicycle. I hate seeing him sad though.

@Pinkmuma Can I ask how did your little one get on? Having the same issues with my nearly 4 week old and wondering what to do next for him

Hi, had the same issue with my little girl was back and forth to the doctors re the constipation she was prescribed lactolose but we did end up switching from Aptamil to the comfort milk and it did really help.'I would also try not to use the bottle prep machine and make the bottles with cooled boiled water and add the hot shot directly from the kettle as you need it, i do believe the bottle prep machine didn't help our daughter's digestive based off the fact it doesn't get hot enough with the hot shot to kill bacteria. Worth a try X
