Reception School Uniform

ReadyToRoll321 · 10/06/2024 13:38

DS is starting Reception in September and I’m just trying to get organised. How many of each uniform item should I purchase? I know I can get more later but don’t want to get caught out if it’s in the wash/lost/ruined. I was thinking
2 school jumpers
3 trousers
4 polo shirts
Does that sound about right?

I used to get 3 jumpers and then 5 shirts and trousers in case I fell behind with washing. Quite often the tops come in packs of 5 anyway.

Stichintime · 10/06/2024 13:41

You need more jumpers, everything goes down it!

OverthinkerTinker · 10/06/2024 13:41

I probably over did this.

We had three jumpers, five polo shirts (two with logos, and three without), five trousers. Two pairs of school shorts. Two pairs school shoes. Two PE kits. One pair of plimsolls, one pair of PE trainers.

We didn't lose anything.

Does your school do PE uniforms for the whole day? Post COVID, our school doesn't do changing for PE so on PE days they wear PE uniform all day. It means you don't end up with a smelly kit at half term. So we have two PE shirts, two shorts, two trousers and two hoodies for PE alone.
Then we have a set of uniform per day. You might be able to get away with less but with paint, marker pens, lunch, dirt, they need washing every day we've found. (And a lot of the kit hasn't lasted the year - marker pens on white shirt, suncream on collars, holes on trousers knees etc).

Singleandproud · 10/06/2024 13:46

I used to do 5 of everything - 3 in the current size and 2 in a size up that way if you get stuck and can't dry them in the winter they can wear the size up and if not you've got some for when they grow.

DillyDeclutter · 10/06/2024 13:49

We have two PE days and three school uniform days but sometimes PE an extra day.

3 sets of PE kit, 3 trousers, 3 polo shirts, 6 jumpers have been OK for us. I am generally very on top of washing but would struggle with less.

Stuff gets worn for such a short time - does your PTA have a second hand uniform shop?

Kitkat1523 · 10/06/2024 13:49

Depends how often you wash

MaggieFS · 10/06/2024 13:51

Looks good to me, but I have six polo shirts. DS' are white so I wash them separately once a week, hence have enough to get through the week because they are so cheap.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/06/2024 13:51

I had a polo shirt for each day- in the grand scheme of what this stuff costs it was minimal

at least 3 jumpers

Eileen101 · 10/06/2024 13:51

Only if you put a wash on everyday!

Prepare for their school lunch to be down it everyday.

mindutopia · 10/06/2024 13:52

I'd go for 2 jumpers, 2 trousers, 2 shirts probably to start. They can be re-worn for more than one day if not stained, the shirts especially when it's winter and they stay in their jumpers all day.

Also check about whether they wear PE kit all day. At my dc's school, they have PE twice a week and they go in PE kit on those days, so 2 full sets of uniform is plenty as they only wear uniform 3 out of the 5 days. I have 1 set of PE kit.

Upminster12 · 10/06/2024 13:53

I have 5 of everything, it makes life easier, I just do one big wash at the weekend specifically for school stuff. I started off with less but kept running short.

I'm not particularly fussy about cleanliness but have found everything needs washing every day, the amount of mess has been worse than nursery!

MsSquiz · 10/06/2024 14:02

My dd is at school nursery and she has:
1 jumper
1 cardigan
4 polo shirts
2 skirts
1 pair of trousers

They also wear their pe kit for the full day 2 days a week so she has:
2 pe polo shirts
1 sweatshirt
1 pair of pe shorts
2 pairs of joggers

onwardandupwards · 10/06/2024 14:09

5 of everything ( my dc school is non branded clothing, leggings ect) like my other 3 dc have/ had, then one big uniform wash on Friday night along with PE kits and 3 water bottles each as they constantly loose them!

bekindtome · 10/06/2024 14:11

My kids don't wear pe kits to school. I have 5 of everything. Now I have a dryer so probably could have less but I prefer it.

ParentsTrapped · 10/06/2024 14:21

Just depends on how often you plan to wash.

Have most of whatever they wear as a top layer (ie jumpers or polo shirts) because they end up covered in food/pen/mud.

I think I had 3 x jumpers, a fleece, 3 x polos, 2 x trousers then 2 x shorts for summer plus PE kit.

eurochick · 10/06/2024 14:34

Our school wanted a spare set left in school in case of accidents so you might need to factor that in.

mitogoshi · 10/06/2024 14:36

Mine had 2 jumpers, 3 bottoms and 6 polo shorts because they came in packs of 3 ... I kept one unworn for "best" eg photos and special occasions

APurpleSquirrel · 10/06/2024 14:44

I think I must be in the minority - I do one white wash every two weeks, one dark & one colour wash each week; so I got my DC at least 10 of everything - polo's, trousers/dresses, jumpers/cardigans as inevitably they need a fresh change everyday & I'm not putting on mixed or half loads. Means I can guarantee at least two weeks of school clothes should the washing machine break etc. But it all depends on how your household runs & finances.

CCLCECSC · 10/06/2024 14:48

I'd go a minm of 3 jumpers/cardigans, 3 bottoms but 5 polo shirts. If your school has an alternative polo colour to white, buy it!!

Not one of the white polos I bought made it beyond 1st half term due to stains.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/06/2024 14:50

I have at least 5 of everything.

ReadyToRoll321 · 10/06/2024 14:53

Thanks all. The school do wear PE kit all day, but have said it won’t start until January so I will wait before getting that, just incase he shoots up before then (unlikely but you never know). Great idea about buying the size up as a spare! Especially for the school jumper. I never even thought about that

APurpleSquirrel · 10/06/2024 15:02

Do see if your school had a second hand uniform sale or rail as you may start out wanting the uniform will stay clean, but you'll soon quickly realise that all school jumpers/cardigans - especially expensive logo'd ones - seem inexplicably drawn to black white board pen - usually the day before/off school photo day!

CheckerboardCheck · 10/06/2024 15:07

6 T-shirts - one for everyday and a spare for their bag.
Same for trousers/ shorts.
3 jumpers - none of the jumpers have been worn. Too warm, running around never had them on! Complete waste of money!

Greatmate · 10/06/2024 15:07

I've only got 1 set of uniform with the logo. That only comes out for school photos and trips. The rest is from the supermarket. We have 4 of everything and I pe kit. . I've had to replace the pe kit because the joggers were thread bare. I've also had to buy new shirts. The paint just doesn't wash out inspite of my best efforts and every product I can think of.
