potty training, how do I get dd to poo on the loo?

DD(2.11) has been in knickers since August last year, and did a couple of poos on the loo then, but we went away on holiday shortly after and since then she's always asked for her nappy to do a poo, or she does it in her night nappies first thing in the morning. We have a present wrapped ready for when she goes on the toilet, or her potty seat, she can choose, but she says she deosn't want to. A couple of times we've really tried to persuade her and shes even sat on the loo and pushed, but then says its too hard and won't go. I don't want her to end up constipated so feel I shouldn't pressurise her too much. Shes also very private when she poos, likes to hide herself away in another room and poos standing up. Are there other things I could try or should I just give her more time?

My DS1 who is 3 is just like this, very secretive (and embarassed) when he does a poo!
But we cant get him out of nappies at all, so cant offer any advice, sorry.
Hope someone will be able to give you some good advice.

Yes, poos can take longer to sort out. My ds2 pooed in his pants for what seemed like ages after he was fine with wees. The hiding thing is instinctive - you wouldn't poo in the open in case you were accosted by a bear or an enemy. Can you hide a potty in a wardrobe or behind a curtain?

DD 2.11 is the same. She always does her poo of the day first thing. Like your dd she does it in her night nappy. I try and take the nappy off before she does the poo, then she'll ask for her potty to do it in. I haven't tried to get her to do it on the toilet yet, although she wees on toilets when we are out and about.

Have you thought of using a star chart?

I totally understand the hiding away. What I dont quite get is why some kids are fine to wee on the loo/potty, but not poo. Just like the OP's DD.
My DS knows when he needs to have a poo, when he slopes off I ask him if he wants to do a poo on the loo, that theres a lovely treat waiting for him if he does, but he totally refuses.

I read somewhere that some children dislike the sensation of the poo falling from their body. Fear of losing control maybe?

Pannacotta · 07/04/2008 13:50

Thats interesting. WOnder why that passes feeling/fear and why for some its much later than others.

I don't think a star chart would work with her as she won't do it at all. She now does all her wees on the loo, and I offer her the loo or the potty for poos, but I could try putting her potty in a corner for her to try on, she often poos in her nappy in the corner of the kitchen, that might work. Dh suggested getting a really special present for her, that she can see, which she'll only have when she goes on the potty or loo. Any other suggestions?

I read on MN the suggestion of putting a nappy across the potty for the child to poo on.

Pannacotta · 07/04/2008 14:02

miziman thats a good idea for potty users.
DOnt suppose that woudl work on the loo though!!

LittleB · 07/04/2008 14:02

mimizan, thanks I could try that.
